Not a good sign went over the road trucking manufacturers have layoffs.

How do Mack products stack up against the other players in regards to overall quality and development?

It seems there are plenty of truck makers. Might the competition just be 'real good'?

Mack is stating that's one of the reasons for the layoffs. The list of businesses going this direction is getting longer.
They just Debuted their New tractor unit that is 11% more fuel efficient. If port deliveries slow down then Fewer trucks needed, however... If a number of companies start coming back to the USA for manufacturing that may turn around. It's the slinky effect.

I have personal experience w/ two small businesses affected by the proposed and shifting tariffs, one affected directly and one indirectly. Both are having to shift their operations and may even have to reduce staff; one gearing up for significantly higher cost of goods that must be passed on to consumers leading to reduced sales as well as their customers' decrease in disposable income (overall costs and decline in equities) and the other having to find new customers (intentionally try to limit customer base to assure service excellency) again due to anticipated business decrease. End result is that both businesses may reduce their own spending and may reduce staff leading to the severed employees spending less in their communities, on and on.... I also heard about an IPO and potential acquisitions being tabled due to the market volatility. Postponing an IPO is gruesomely costly as is the lessened availability within the capital markets.

This tariff turmoil is very real, costly, hurts all consumers and will be very damaging if allowed to continue...

As far as decoupling from China, that low cost manufacturing helped drive our economic boom and if we don't utilize it, someone else surely will. Addressing supply chain concentration in China needs to be done, but they should and will always play a part in our economy....we just need to leverage that as appropriate.

The Wall Street Journal has had the best coverage of the current situation.

Long haul truckers crisscrossing the USA have said the economy has been slowing down for the past 2 years.

They see every region of the country and every industry.
What does ‘Bob The Long Haul Trucker’ say about this economy ?

I follow a few OTR truckers on YouTube and they say things have been slowing down for a while.

FedEx, DHL and UPS saying global economy and shipping is trending downward….
FedEx, DHL and UPS closing warehouses / sorting facilities before these recent trade tariffs
Both companies offering pilot early retirement packages to trim pilot staffing.

What do CB talking, gear shifting, jake braking truckers know about the economy that the MBAs from degree mills like Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Duke, Georgetown, Carnegie, Stanford, Columbia, Wharton don’t know….?????

They don’t teach this stuff at fancy universities….. long haul truckers at Flying J talk about it and our economy.

Copper demand used for manufacturing is down.

Cardboard box demand is down.

I don't know much about OTR trucking however the city might need to install traffic lights in our neighborhood with the crazy amount of Amazon delivery vehicles driving around day and night..

Nothing really besides the driving...and yes B schools teach about looking at all economic indicators and the Fed, investment firms and analysts all have access to the appropriate information. The reduced trips, loads, etc. that the drivers see are all noticed well before that as reduced plans, bookings, pre-buys of fuel, fleet planning, futures, etc.

Couldn’t at all possibly be that unionized workers have shot themselves in the foot again with wage and benefit concessions.
Mack trucks are exactly like John Deere tractors. Need parts? Got to go to Mack dealership only. Most OTR trucks are component vehicles ordered with whatever steering axle, engine, transmission, drive axles, suspension, on and on. Not so with Mack trucks. Very few options besides Mack branded components.

Friend has been long haul trucker for some 25+ yrs. He not long ago changed companies and it was because the trucks his company had were mostly Mack and Volvo. They were fairly newer (2020+) trucks and he was always complaining about the truck breaking down and losing driving hours. Lot of what he complained about was the telemetry and electronics. Like one time he called to say he was stuck at the scales because of telemetry issues between the truck and the scales.

Supply Chain Disruption was the buzzword for 2020-2023

Tariffs is the new buzzword for lots of CEOs in 2025.
CEOs will NOT say economy was slowing before these tariffs.

Do tariffs hurt American companies ?
Yes, 100% these tariffs hurt American companies competing on global stage.

Will Boeing ever sell another 737, 777 or 787 to China ever again ?
I don’t know what will happen.

Maybe China says Airbus only from this point forward….
