Mack Truck laying off 100s in PA & MD

Since we continue off-topic on tariffs vs. Mack truck demise................... can anyone answer this simple question: Last week I purchased an in-stock French-made chemical injector ($750) from it's Florida distributor and a 5% tariff was applied. If in-stock before the tariffs were started, shouldn't it be tariff free? Shouldn't the tariffs be applied to post-tariff delivered stock?

that's not even how that works.... the importer pays the tarriff, and that isn't you. imported before or after doesn't matter, this is just a mark-up like car dealers do.

Step 1: Move manufacturing out of country and collect the profits

Step 2: wait until there's nobody who knows how to run the equipment

Step 3: introduce tariffs across everything and make everyone suffer

Step 4: wait until the other countries decide to not sell to USA

That's not a thing. It's the US importer deciding not to buy (and pay tarriffs).

I travel a lot for work, maybe I can interview the long haul big rig truckers and ask them about the economy and see what they say.

Maybe mods will allow some cussing in these videos.

I will be in 6 different states in the near future….
Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon, New York, Kansas and North Carolina.

I'm not sure that's correct AG... Here's a tariffs tracker.
No global tariffs are in effect. However, your link to alert me to the fact that anybody who is buying oil from terrorist countries still have tariffs in effect and other political things like that.

It’s all good. I really really don’t care. I just wanted to make a statement that some people thought global tariffs were in effect. They are not some specific countries is all.

I’m all for tariffs, 100% for tariffs for any country that places tariffs on our products reciprocal tariffs are called for

Good post, definitely outlines the details.
There are tariffs in effect the global tariffs I am talking about have been suspended until July 9

As far as everything else, I’m off for it. It’s about time the United States stops getting taken advantage of. Using tariffs to discourage criminal states from buying oil from other criminal states that’s fine with me too.

I can tell you right now, God‘s honest truth as I’m posting this my wife walks in to our home office from her home office and starts ranting to me that they are having major issues with China regarding tariffs registrations and all kinds of things. It’s becoming a major headache, getting products and pricing out of China.

It doesn’t affect her income, but it does give her headaches dealing with itso she just said to me I don’t even care. If the customer wants the product let them order the product from another country.

The supply chain replenishment shock is still a few weeks out. Shortages and price hikes. Layoffs in trucking, warehousing, etc.

No, the price hike took effect immediately on products from China. Anything coming into US ports no matter how long the merchandise was at sea. It’s taxed with the tariff once it arrives

Maybe energy prices didn't increase because they were targeted tariff increases (steel, aluminum, etc.), somewhat reasonable levels and mostly short lived. BTW, prices certainly did increase on the targeted commodities and goods. No idea how one can say they didn't. Why would they not? Generally two things happen w/ tarriffs in the short term; companies absorb the costs and take the margin hit or pass the costs on to consumers...there is no other magic.

Glad you are curious and thanks for the guidance on my sources of news, now how many global operations have you had responsibility for? Established any China or other low-cost region sourcing? Offshored anything? Ever had approval authority on build sheets for various global local and US content compliance? Set up local suppliers and assembly to enable and support sales to NATO? Have friends whose business are being impacted? If the answer is none please pardon me if I am done here ;), since I've been there & done that.
All you have done is brag about yourself in 4 posts so yes we're done.

The freight channels i follow say outside a couple things general freight is WAY down, lots of containers are being abandoned at the dock. Extremely regional though. Will move like a wave through the economy over the next year.

Who pays if the entity receiving goes under and it’s abandoned?

Truckers keep America rolling, they are the very first people in the USA to see a recession on the horizon.

When I travel for work out of state I will ask ‘Bob the Long Haul Trucker’ how were things going BEFORE these recent tariffs.

Some long haul truckers drive 140K miles per year crisscrossing the USA.

Off Topic:
I’m increasing prices on parts to my customers due to tariffs….

Batteries are high volume items in my small business.

AG, for the most part consumers are buying existing inventory; the tariff affected stock will take the requisite lead time to hit the shelves or be used in mfg assemblies.

Pretty much all the goods portion of what my company sells comes from Europe - mostly Germany but some other countries. So far we are just absorbing the cost. Its very high margin compared to cost of goods though - the real cost is designing and applying the stuff. So tariff on the import cost likely doesn't hurt us like it would someone importing a commodity.

The thing you need to remember is the tariff is applied at import cost, not sell cost. So if you import at $100 and sell at $200, you only pay tariff on the $100. If someone charges you tariff on their sell price, there taxing you on their margin, which is crooked.

Most of my competitors make goods also in Europe or Japan - so were all in the same boat. There is no one manufacturing in USA that I know of. The traditional USA suppliers moved there stuff to Mexico years ago mostly, or went under, or sold out to companies in Europe or Japan. I am guessing whatever the big players do, everyone will do the same. I think everyone is just waiting to see what eventually things settle at.

I have heard of one company so far making their prices + tariff. I will likely talk to someone from there soon, so I will find out how thats working.

I wasn't a member here during the "C" time period . Was anyone up in arms when whole states were getting their entire debt wiped clean ? Trillion dollars flushed down the toilet. Billions stolen and never recovered, is that what this country wants to go back to.
