Machine engine oil flush.

A local place around here does engine flushes with a Bilstein R-2000 machine.

1. Heated Bilstein R-2000 Engine Flush solution is pumped through the oil filter port at 42 PSI.
2. R-2000 Engine Flush solution flows through the engine's lubrication system dissolving sludge and varnish.
3. R-2000 Engine Flush solution back flushes the oil pump pickup screen. Dissolved sludge, varnish and debris flow to the oil pan where it is vacuum extracted to the BILSTEIN R-2000 Engine Flush Machine. Particulates over 3 microns are removed through three stages of ultra-fine filtration.


Doe this stuff actually clean sludge? and is it harmful?

We have it here as well,
It sounds like a good idea in theory, but the cost is so high ?

125 canadian for one treatment ???, i dont know how they make any money charging that price ???

Yes, it will clean some sludge out of the engine. Yes, it is harmful to your wallet. Run Auto-RX exactly per the instructions and you will have a clean engine and a healthier wallet.

Don't bother with the Bilstein wallet flush. Save your money for more frequent OCI's with better oil.

Did you get the Bilstein 'marketing' brochure from the shop? how often does it need to be done?

It'll clean any sludge that the solution comes in contact with.
The only problem is that this is an 'engine off' flush which means you only flush where the cleaning solution flows.
The best way to go is with a running engine flush, which will clean other areas caused by oil splash & engine movement that won't be touched by the 'engine off flush'.

If you must Bilstein, use a 5-10 minute OTC product prior to it. Or, find a shop that uses one of the better flush machines that allows the engine to run during the procedure.

I have had a lot of experience with the Bilstein engine flush machine. It does an exceptional job.

I do feel that there is an element of snake oil though. I think that in shops that have the machine, the service is way oversold. It probably isn't needed well over 90% of the time.

I was especially upset when a customer told me that a nearby dealership had sold him a Bilstein flush on the first oil change "to get rid of all that break in metal".

I know it works very well though, since I have seen engines torn down after a flush that were very clean. The same engine had a heavy sludge build up that was evident from looking through the oil filler hole before the flush.

If you are doing reasonable maintenance you should never need this service. If you are continually behind in maintenance and/or the engine has been overheated, it would be beneficial.
