Apparently every unit built up to 5/22/22 will be subject to a recall around the high voltage battery "contacters" welding themselves either open or shut.

All deliveries are halted.

No one knows if there if it will be a hardware fix or software fix or both.

The mach E gt is already limited to 5 seconds of wide open throttle because of battery heat.

Software clamping either discharge or recharge performance would be devastating as the car is already at the bottom of long distance list due to charging and slower than its competition.

Its a software update.

Ford expects to offer a solution for the problem in the third quarter, according to the bulletin. Mustang Mach-E owners will be notified via mail after repair instructions and parts ordering information have been provided to dealers.

Deep said the company’s remedy will include a software update to the vehicle’s “Secondary On-Board Diagnostic Control Module and Battery Energy Control Module.” It will be conducted remotely, or over-the-air. Customers also have the option of taking their vehicle to a Ford dealer
 
Not all vehicles are affected. Must be a manufacturing issue.
Update June 14th, 11:38AM ET: A spokesperson said the problem affects 48,924 Mustang Mach-E vehicles sold in the US — nearly half of the estimated 100,000 vehicles produced during that time. A previous version said nearly all of the vehicles could be affected.
 
This is what we can expect when the "Big Boys", who have finally seen the writing on the wall with regards to the EV market try to rush their vehicles to market to compete with Tesla who already has 20 years of experience behind them. And I suspect that Tesla has a much superior engineering and design team working for them as well.

But then again Ford sure has had an outrageous number of recalls in the last 5 years with their ICE vehicles too. The new Bronco which is selling well and most likely due to nostalgia and brand loyalty is having serious engine problems. Like Ford hasn't figured out how to make reliable engines in the last 110 years.

Here is something tp ponder: You are Mr. John Q. Public and have heard the news that the price of gas will not only be going higher, but if and when it ever does drop again, $5.00 a gallon will be the new norm. So you want to buy an EV and you are almost desperate like a great many consumers today. Are you going to buy an unproven model from the "Big Guys" and pray it isn't a $50K POS that isn't in the shop with serious problems not long after you bought it, or are you going to buy a Tesla ?

Elon made a good point in a recent interview that Rivian and Lucid will go bankrupt unless they change their business model.

GM is struggling with their EV's. Ford showed promise but their track record of reliability for their vehicles is rather pathetic.
Maybe VW ? The shake out over the next few years will be brutal.

I think the big guys will be fine in the long run, they have a lot more resilience to handle these errors and EV growing pains due to their scale. After all, people continue to buy their junk and recall laden ICE vehicles. Some will learn and go Asian, but I think they will get their act together sooner than later.

Yeah, they need to buy into crypto and overspend on unrelated pet projects. That's how you don't go bankrupt.

Electric cars are about to become a commodity instead of a novelty, and the commodity car companies are in good position to undercut Tesla on price.

Actually, the opposite is true.
Companies are already losing money on their EVs. It is thought GM loses $9K on every Bolt sold.
Tesla's margins are the envy of the auto industry. They are the only company that could cut EV prices and still show a profit.
That's leverage.

Good points but this has happened a 1000x with all of the legacy auto makers, with even more basic systems such as the fuel tanks in Pintos or ignition cylinders with GM, etc. EV and "self driving" is an evolving technology, mistakes will happen. Gas tanks and ignition cylinders have been around 100+ years.

That a small company such as Tesla has been able to pull this off and become a competitor shows they are doing something right. I presume lots of the allegations of things going on in Tesla's no union factories and media exposure is from the big 3 trying to attack their image via connections and media resources. Not that Tesla buyers care. I'm sure somethings are warranted, but I would bet some Tesla hate in the news is fueled by the big 3 and maybe oil.

To be fair, that $9,000 number was an estimate from nearly 6 years ago before deliveries ever started. Even if it was true then, I’m sure the numbers look different now after they’ve made over 100,000 of them.

In addition, the Bolt MSRP has dropped $10,900 (with destination) since that first report. If that $9,000 was still true that would mean they’re now losing close to $20,000/car? No chance that’s true.

I’m surprised people still get worked-up over recalls. It’s millions of cars every year, from every manufacturer. “Oh no, this is terrible! They’re gonna fix my car for free!!!” 🤷🏼‍♂️

Even the 2018 Toyota Camry (first year of the current gen) has been recalled 7 times. Pistons were too large (seized engine), fuel lines not connected correctly (fires), vacuum pump (loss of power brakes), etc, etc.

Recalls arent created equally. . Some are a mere part swaps, some are software - others radically affect the nature of the car - like the VW diesel recall.

The vast majority of Tesla recalls happen over the air - no appointment driving waiting necessary.

Currently Ford is telling people they will address this with an over the air update - which means they wont address the actual problem at the source but hobble either the charging, or the sustained output to cover up the overheating problem.

The GT is already limited to 5 seconds of WOT because the Ford battery pack is susceptible to overheating, and journalists have already found they can heat soak the standard ones pretty easily.

IF this is the case this recall will remove functionality the user already had.

This car has had coach building AND electronic problems from day one.

That’s not true. Looks like at least 39 Tesla recalls. (NHTSA says 41). Only 10 of the 39 are OTA fixes.

And yes, IF. We will see. The Bolt started with a software fix, but ultimately owners got a new, better battery and a superior product in the end. All speculation right now on this recall.

Cars .coms list isn't complete there have actually been more. Stuff like increasing the sound level of the blind crosswalk noise.

I'll rephrase the model 3 and y's have been mostly OTA. The S&X have been around another decade and had their share of drive ins.

Tesla has had nothing like we are seeing with this latest problem which effect EVERY car built until a few weeks ago and has the potential to fundamentally change the charging and or performance of the car.

I really hope this is not the case as Id like to see Ford be successful.
