The wrench set was made in China? That sounds like their "Evolv" line of Chinese-made tools (which they used to call "Companion" but they switched to a new name and different packaging).

Sure, they've had certain Craftsman items made in China for years (jacks, for example, and odd stuff) but I've yet to see any of the mainstream wrenches/sockets made there. Or perhaps things are changing in a hurry.

This is the Craftsman branded wrench set I saw Made in China
http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00914018000P?mv=rr

and this is the other thing I was talking about

Both of these things are clearly branded CRAFTSMAN yet made in China. The whole reason I buy craftsman hand tools are because they are affordable and made in the USA. It looks like I will have to buy way more [censored] at harbor freight. I can't afford pro tools and if I have to buy china [censored] the stuff at harbor freight is cheaper than sears.

css,

Well, they certainly aren't a 1st set of wrenches but are hard line tools nonetheless. So, that is another shame.

milwaukee,

Don't forget to look at Armstrong, Proto, & Wright at online stores, Grainger (I get a 10% discount through work), etc. They make a lot of tools in the USA but are many times much less than tool truck prices.

Much of what they have are superior to Mac & Snap-on anyway. Better to the Europeans than the Chinese I feel. I understand though if you are a mechanic, nothing beats having that truck comes by at least once a week replacing your broken tools without having to take away from your personal time.

I have had more problems with SK sockets than any other US brand.

However, every other SK product I use is great.

I hate to say it, but the husky line from lowes has been pretty good for me. I used to just get craftsman because of the made in USA, but to be honest, I'be broken MANY crafstman sockets and wrenches over the years, and rounded out plenty of sockets, so where it is made didn't make it a better tool.
for other stuff like screwdrivers, Klein is what I get.

Don't buy the Chinese made Craftsman tools. Simple as that. Leave them there. Maybe some brainless being at Sears Holdings will wake up and see that we don't want their Chinese made [censored].

Would I like to have a set of those wrenches? Yes. I like the look of them. Will I buy them? Nope.

You mean Home Depot? Lowes is Kobalt.

yup, whoops, sorry. I meant kobalt. I bought a few deep sockets and torx sockets from them, nicely finished stuff.

What problems?

It boils down to if you really need the absolute best tools ?

Do you make a living working with tools or you just need a basic set for working around the house and on your car. No need to spend and arm and leg on tools.

When I worked for GE repairing medical equipment, I used my dad's Craftsman tools from when he was an airframe and powerplant mechanic for Pan Am working on the DC-10, 727 and 747. Today those tools are about 40 years old and they way they are build.....probably can last another 40 years no problem (no bull).

Not all "Chinese" is created equal. The Chinese make stuff per spec. Lousy spec=lousy tools.
They have the ability to make incredibly high quality stuff if given the specs and compensated for their efforts. Chinese electronics are second to none.

I agree w/ the part that they have the ability to build good stuff, but their electronics are not top notch; in cheap consumer electronics, they may be the only show in town so you can't say they are the best.
there is also much technology they haven't been able to master yet. my company makes lasers and devices for fiber optics and many of our customers are Chinese.

The SK sockets tend to crack when loosening stuck bolts with a normal breaker bar.

Never had that happen with a Craftsman.

Mac is Stanley, Craftsman is Danaher which is also Matco, Gearwrench and K-D.

The only Mac I have is a Macsimizer screwdriver. I want to pick a few more up.

Are Husky or Kobalt made in the USA?

I have seen some USA made Kobalt and Husky tools, some are made in China, and some are made in Taiwan.

You will just have to read the package before you decide to buy something.

WRONG!

I don't know about their electronics but in some heavy industries they spec no chinese or indian suppliers of anything. Period. Raw materials or manufactured goods.
I imagine that will change in time as I don't hear of any chinese skyscrapers collapsing yet but I guess they are all still new...
