M1 vs. M1ep

I would assume they are both different in some way but unless they are a chemist for Exxon, you won't get a definitive answer here. What is the reason you want to know this?

Best you'll get here is a glance of the VOA's if someone has posted them yet

It is kind of strange marketing, last I heard "regular" Mobil 1 was advertising 12k OCIs on their bottles, so what's the "Extended" Performance line advertising? :)

Unless they "toned down" the adpack of regular Mobil 1, so they can create a new more appealing line of oil? :)

I suspected a stronger add pack and/or more PAO content, but nothing other than pure guesses on my part.

Really? I don't see why XM would lie about that. Doesn't make since to me. They had the synthetic market before EP, so no reason to lie about EP abilities and formulation differances with the reg M1.

It really doesn't matter. From what I understand, there isn't much/if any difference.

I'm just asking because from what i read over here on this site i thought at one time there was, boosted add and better base, but could be wrong,i think if they make the clam there has to something better about the oil vs standard flavor 5/30?

Based on my UOA's of M1 EP 5w30 and M1 TSUV 5w30...the EP has more moly and other additives. You can see my UOA's and see the differences.

Yea i remember something being different....

My Scion used M1 EP to a large extent for some reason. It never used Quaker State HP, Pennzoil Platinum, or German Castrol, but it used the Mobil 1 at the rate of over a quart per thousand miles. I used the rest of it in my snowblower which loves it ironically. I will say it seems to be a very good cleaning oil.

TSUV is definitely different than EP. I think Mobil got too caught up in the marketing wars.

I've always stuck with the regular Mobil 1. The EP has more additives (more supersyn) but how much better is it? I Don't know but if it was significant I would think EP would be the Factory fill Mobil 1 oil - but it isn't for any auto makers.

It would only make sense if the manufacturer's recommended OCI was greater than the 7500-10,000 miles that XM cites for regular M1. Note that despite the fact (according to the Japanese material safety data sheets) that M1 forumulations vary from 40%-50% mineral oil for regular M1, to 10%-15% mineral oil for 0w30 AFE... XM's policy is to keep the pricing the same. ($23.50/5qt jug at Walmart.) Except for EP, which is priced higher. ($26/50/5qt)

BTW, EP is not a product in Japan, and so is not included in the data sheets. 0w20 actually only contains 5%-10% mineral oil and is a special case for pricing. Same price per quart, but not available in the jugs.

At any rate, manufacturers probably get lower pricing, with different prices for different products, depending upon actual manufacturing cost for the specific oil. If GM didn't feel that EP was required, they wouldn't pay the extra.
