Mobil 1 made my engine sound like a bucket'o marbles

my 97 legacy and 02 T&C were both rattly-with M1. My 08 JGC has lifter tick bad with M1. We had an 02 accord that did ok with it but got clackity past 5k miles.

I found Mobil 1 10w30 to be better, but really just switched to PP or syntec and haven't had any noise with either.

Valvoline synthetic was also noisy in the accord.

I really like mobil driveline fluids. Not so much the engine oils.

Got some small negatives here on M1 also.

Definitely noisier in the 6.1 than my usual Amsoil. Seemed to accentuate valvetrain sounds. Subtle but noticeable.

It CAN be the oil. Every oil is different. Noise doesn't necessarily mean the engine is being worn. As an example, a new engine can sound bad on certain oils.

Some engines just run quieter on certain oils.

The k20a3 in my 04 Honda has a lot of valvetrain chatter, but it's noticeably louder when using Mobil 1 5w30. Went back to Amsoil and it toned down a bit. My sister's 05 Honda with the d16 doesn't have a problem with Mobil 1 0w-20. Plan on running Mobil 1 0w-40 in my Volvo, eventually.

I agree. I never believed any of this Mobil 1 noise baloney...

I am quite a fan of Mobil 1 (most of the time I use Mobil 1 in my cars), but I agree from batch to batch there is a different on the noise of the cars due to the oil.
In 2006-2007, I noticed the SM 5w30 M1 I got produced louder noise when the weather is hot than the new generation 5w30 M1.

True my engine still has no problem until now, but I did notice some difference before. I always blame on A1 only formulation, but since nowadays all are A5 and I only buy A5 formulation, seems the issue never reoccur. What I still notice is the noise change after around 5-7k km depends on the usage though. Hopefully the SN will stand better, but I haven't tried yet since I am still clearing my SM stocks.

I've seen a 60 tonne generator rotor go from 125um vibration to 20um by simply increasing the oil temperature by 9F due to the change in viscosity.

Very interesting...too bad we don't have vibration meters on cars! There are Vib meters for most modern jet engines...but a vib meter on a car would settle the subjectivity that is present in all of the "oil brand X" makes my car run "smooth" "quiet" "rough" discussions...

Personally, I have never noticed any difference between brands of oil in any of my vehicles, and wonder how much of the perception of "smooth" is placebo effect related to the action of changing the oil...a vib meter would settle that...

Cheers,
