Let's say I have an engine that may need some cleaning.
Let's also say that I have M1 HM 10w30, Rotella T5 10w30, D1 5W-40, Ultra in both SM and SN 10W- or 5w30 as well as PP 5w30 on hand.
What would you use and why?

PU 5w30 as it was a stout oil with good specs

All things being equal PU. Because it is just as good or better then any of the brands you listed. In the real world I chose PPPP because I can find it near my price point of $3 a quart for PCMO without using rebates.

Ultra hands down, aside from running kerosene through your engine, you won't find anything that cleans like Ultra and Platinum do.

Most of my life up until about a year ago i have been using PYB and i have to admit my engines stayed very clean.. But i think any good synthetic will keep your engine clean..Pennzoil Platinum or Mobil 1 would be my choice they are both good cleaning synthetics and im sure there are others.

Synthetics have the ability to incorporate stronger add-packs than conventionals. Oils in general are minor cleaners..... not major (one OCI) cleaners. Buy products to add to the oil, for better, faster cleanings. A good synthetic overall will clean faster than a good conventional. All of em' need multiple OCIs. Over time, you will see an improvement to a somewhat, dirty engine. But generally not real noticeable in (1) typical 7K synthetic oil OCI.

That is why I suggested trying both Ultra and Shell Rotella-6. If someoe prefers Shell Rotella-5 and Platinum or Mobil-1. that's their preference, not mine as the first two I would pick.

Pennzoil advertising certainly seems to have had its effect in creating believers in the cleaning magic of Ultra.
I'd think that the dispersant package of any dual rated HDEO would make for more effective cleaning, but I am apparently a minority of one in this thread.
M1 HM is also touted for its cleaning abilities but has apparently not reached critical mass in imparting this thinking.
I guess I was asking about the "why" part and got no responses addressing it.
