M1 engine noises...

this points out a hole in M1s product line, you either use a 100c vis of 10 or jump to a 14.3
this is why folks are mixing M1 or going to GC at 12.1

Mobil should've made their 0w30 racing oil a thick 30wt oil.

I don't think that oil is selling very well for them, you barely hear about it on here, and nobody mentions it at all on any of the other automotive message boards I visit. Is anyone here even running their 0w30 racing oil??

At least for this crowd, I think that GC would have the lock on 0w-30, given the numbers it consistently seems to post.

Although not a scientific approach, it seems a little odd to me that the racing 0w30 has a higher 100 C viscosity that the M1 10w30, but a lower HT/HS rate (2.99 versus 3.17).

I think my 4.0L sounds quieter with M1 0w40 than Delo400 15W40. Maybe because Mobil 1 0w40 has 20% Group V(?) (so I've been reading)

In speaking with Terry and looking at comparable racing oils such as the 76 Racing oil, they are meant to be that thin for maximum HP. Terry made a good point and said that in some cases they want the oil to shear for maximum HP. Thickening will result in a loss of HP. The oil is robust enough to be that thin which is the point of it. I know it's not a fair comparison, but Rusty Wallace flat out said they qualify with a Mobil 1 0w-5 wt oil. That is thin!

I have it in my 4Runner right now. I'm about 2000 miles into a 10K run and then I'll have a UOA. I'll be surprised if the stuff works any better than GC or one of the plain old M1 variations in my application.

I also think the stuff is too expensive if you have to mail order it. The cost ends up over $8 a quart with shipping.

I think John Browning is running it in one vehicle also.

As far as the initial subject of the thread, M1 noise, it's been that way for years. I tried M1 15W-50 in some air cooled motorcycle applications in the early 80's and it was noisier than the Klotz 10W-40 synthetic we had been using, and noisier than any of the dino lubes we tried.

I really don't think it means a thing.

Well after just 1 week of having M1 5w30 in my 4runner I noticed this morning a noisier engine but only at idle.I had not heard this before today and thought it may be just because of the cold temps we have been dealing with.

could it be that Mobil has a higher detergent level and it removes someold petro byproducts and has soewhat less tac and flows in the engine faster????

My Toyota V6 has pretty much seen mostly all M1 5W30

for most of it's life with no real strange noises although it does feel a tad smoother with Havoline 5W30 i'm running this OCI.

This is why it's NOT just the viscosity difference. Yes, M-1 is thinner on average than other oils of the same grade, however, I believe there is something lacking in the addative package that alludes to the noise differences.

After a thousand miles on M1 5w30 SS I found it's only louder on cold mornings. On warmer mornings it is no louder than with dino, so in my case I don't think it's the oil just the temperature.

I'm using Supertech 5w30 Synthetic in my Ford 4.6L SOHC V8 and the noises are the same, which suggests either the oil is not to blame, OR it's not the engine but the fuel injectors.

Ford 3.0 DOHC V6 - M1 5W30 sounds no different then 5W30 dino or MC 5W20 semi-syn.

Ford 2.0 I4 (Zetec) sounds no different with M1 5W30 then dino 5W30 or M1 10W30.

My engine runs quieter actually with M1 0W20 compared to the thicker GC I ran previously.
