M1 5W-40 TDT in 997.1 Porsche C2S

I have to agree with cujet, unless there is actually abnormal wear in other unseen particle sizes(which you'd figure are plenty big enough for an oil filter to trap, resulting from a serious mechanical flaw OR failed internal part), then the noise range is still that.

Of course, it's splitting hairs. That's what people like to do. They want to find the absolute best, no questions.

Most all API certified oils that meet the required specs, including viscosity among other more detailed requirements, will be more than enough for the apps most of us are using or run into/service.

That being said, some do prefer to buy 'the best', others like it as a hobby, etc...some just want to try to learn more.

If 'slightly' more noise above 'a whisper' is being heard/seen through a UOA like this one, some just like to keep things appearing 'as quiet' as possible. Just my take.

Taken from Exxon Mobil Data Sheet dated 2001:
HTHS is not listed, I believe it was in 4.1 range or so.
You are right Bob, it is a bit thicker than typical Euro spec 5W-40.

Typical Properties
Mobil 1 Truck and SUV
SAE Grade 5W-40
Viscosity, ASTM D 445
cSt @ 40ºC 102
cSt @ 100ºC 14.8
Viscosity Index, ASTM D 2270 151
Sulfated Ash, wt%, ASTM D 874 1.35
Total Base #, mg KOH/g, ASTM D 2896 12
Pour Point, ºC, ASTM D 97 -45
Flash Point, ºC, ASTM D 92 226
Density @ 15ºC kg/l, ASTM D 4052 0.854

Thank you everybody for the comments.
Splitting a hair is not the intent here.
I plan to keep my car for years to come, so as you can imagine it is important to me to find a most suited lubricant for the job.
I am quite sure there are others, like me, who will benefit from this thread as well.

You call those wear numbers low? Aluminum and iron are both over 10.
I've seen wear numbers lower than that many times in this UOA section.

I hate to be blunt, but the fact that you are still making these same types of comments after the lengthy discussion of this topic that we had the other day....

You really need to stop commenting on people's UOA's. you do NOT know enough about this topic to be making the types of posts that you do and are raising alarm where none is needed. There is now evidence from MULTIPLE sources (like the post below the one I am quoting) that completely contradict all the fear mongering you do in this section, yet you continue unabated. You haven't even toned it down!

I doubt I am the only one frustrated by this Chicken Little "the sky is falling" posting you do that appears in almost every bloody UOA posted in this section.

Please stop. Or at least tone it down a few notches.

What's your point and what do you think that means?

I agree with what others have suggested, M1 0W-40 is indeed a hard to beat engine lub' for any Porsche and definitely an unbeatable value when sourced in the States.

In Canada we do have some 0W-40 options not available States side such as PAO based ESSO XD-3 0w30 & 0W-40 (now relabeled as Mobil Delvac Elite 222 0w30 and Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 0W-40).
A 50/50 blend would produce a suitably light 0W-40. Other GP III based 0W-40 options are available from Shell and Petro-Canada.

By fav' Canadian sourced alternative to M1 would be a 3:1 blend of Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 0W-40 and either the Toyota Brand 0W-20 or Honda 0W-20 (only 5 bucks/L). The net result would be a 190 VI, high moly, predominately PAO, high TBN, light 0W-40. And at under $8/L it's a lot cheaper than M1 0W-40 at $11/L at Cdn Tire.
Only thing is it's not on the Porsche A40 list or are the other options if that matters.

Anyway, sorry but I couldn't resist providing a Canadian only option!

Wow, Caterham, all I need is a white lab gown, goggles and gloves. A true Doctor Zhivago.

I was actually thinking about Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40 that IS (hard to believe, I know) available from my local and a bit hid away store.
It is A40, Ferrari, Maserati and many others approved.
Any experience with PU in P-cars, anybody?
Thanks again.

How much are they selling it for over there? Just curious.

About $11 + all levies, per liter of course. Does not come in 5 L jugs.

PU Euro 5W-40 is not a bad option (HTHSV 3.68cP, VI 179) but at 11 bucks/L no bargain.
I do prefer the spec's of M1 0W-40 (HTHSV 3.8cP, VI 185) and it is more commonly available and therefore occationally goes on sale like last week-end at Cdn Tire, sometimes a deal can be had at Parts Source and NAPA and your local Imperial Oil oil depot sells it for about $10/L.

You can also get it at a Chrysler dealer. Mine was able to match/beat CT on price.

I picked up 4 Gallons of Castrol GTX, Diesel, 15w40, SL, CI-4, at Kmart on clearance. IMO...For $.99 a quart an outstanding deal for some hard to find oil. I found 3 Gallons in quart bottles and 1 old white gallon jug for $9.00. I brought it to the attention of then store manager that the quarts were only $.99....she marked it down to $4.00.

I know some people who can really use this strong, robust Diesel oil in their trucks back in Coney Island.

That was 10 years ago (CI-4+ is old now even)
