Over the last couple years I have found a couple filter exchanged like this. The last time was when Walmart was closing out the older model of Supertech.
An Ultra box with a Supertech in it. Left it on the shelf out of the box.

You CAN NOT OPEN THE BOX, without breaking the seal (Fram Ultra boxes) so how are you checking these filters? You are all guilty of SHOPLIFTING?

Allied Signal Fram had windows on their boxes where you could see the filter in the package.

Opening packaging, particularly of food items, is considered shoplifting as well. You do not necessarilly need to remove merchandise from the premises without paying for it.

I'll check the contents of an item before purchase if it pleases me, and the retailer is free to call the police if it pleases them.

Correct. The oil you use is far more important than the filter you use.

Debatable ... people here seem to write off oil filers as not being an important part of the trifecta that helps keep engines healthy.

If the seal isn't broken then how could someone have switched filters?

If the box seal isn't broken, then there's no way anybody could switch them. How in the [heck] is it shoplifting when you open something to see if it's damaged or not? Am I shoplifting when I try on a pair of shoes to see if they fit?? You, sir, need to

LAY OFF THE CRACK PIPE!

Was looking at the XG9018 for a Saturn at my local Walmart, 4 of them on the shelf, all 4 open, 3 with Supertech, 1 with an regular Fram.
3 of 4 XG9688 were also open with Supertech in them, 3 of 8 XG2 had Supertech in them.

I took them all and set them on the counter of the auto department and told the clerk what had happened. She said she was surprised to see it. Guess it was her first day?

I bet their manager was like "Our ST brand sells really well, I need to stock more" haha

Since it's a question, I wouldn't take it as far as calling it shoplifting. That's a bit extreme. Personally when it comes to the Ultra I wouldn't and don't feel good about breaking seal in the WM store. If I felt really OCD compelled I might check it at checkout, or less OCD likely check it after leaving the store, in car, parking lot. But the FU has pretty good track record of not much to see, perhaps worst case a dented can. Last ones I purchased came from PB delivered to my door, so I could only inspect after they arrived anyway. OT Thought you might appreciate, a few days ago I changed the oil and filter on one of my vehicles. In prepping the filter, I did prefill it with oil. It's a vertical thread end up application, so filled it to the top. Not so much as tick on start up, sweet.

Back to topic, in my observation it seems some view incidents like this as some kind of an indictment of WM. I'm not one of those. I view it as an indictment of the previously mentioned low life types that may happen be found at WM as well as other places. Flip side, picked up two jugs of M1 rollback priced online $22.88, not yet shown in store. As I don't have a smart phone took ad copy. Service manager happened to be behind counter, took out his smart phone, confirmed price told check out person to ring up with rollback. After M1 rebate, ~$22 plus tax for two jugs. Livin large.

I find this to be true as well. I always check the filter itself before buying. I haven't ran into a sealed box yet.

Right!
The plastic clear sticky seal on the top-side of the XG9018 box doesn't need to be bothered.
Just pop the unsealed flaps on the bottom side of the box to access the innards!
No muss, no fuss.
And easy to check to see if the proper contents are there.

Agreed. For me, when I buy my Wix filters, I'm opening the box and taking a look at the louvers right there. That's not shoplifting. I'm not wishing to go back half an hour later when I get home and find something I don't like.
