I spoke to a Lucas rep about the viscosity of blending 6 qts of 5w20 with 1qt of the regular LOS. He said i would end up with a 10w40..... Do you agree ?
Is there any testimonies of Lucas lowering the oil temps that you know of in a vehicle? I know I have read of it doing this in certain industrial machinery but am unsure if it does the same in an automobile.

If you`re wanting a 40 weight oil for your Mustang, just get some Mobil 1 0W40 or 10W40HM. I wouldn`t go near oil aditives.

My experience with this stuff = garbage long chain oil cuts. The only additive (not cleaner) thats been "proven" is the "micro lubricant" zmax. I have never used it; some here have and might chime in.

I know some snake oil salesmen can sound convincing, but first you should talk to your engine manufacturer or read the owners handbook, where is probably says, "DON'T USE OIL ADDITIVES".

If you want a 10w-40 then run a 10w-40, forget the stupid lucas stuff. And why do you keep starting so many different threads? I've seen like 4 or 5 about this car in just the past two days. You're going to get better information if you put all this together in one thread. The guys in one of the other threads pointed out that you probably have the classic DOHC 4.6 failed valve guides and no oil is going to fix it.

Absolutely not. There are more sensible ways to thicken oil if you want something heavier, such as mixing grades, and I'm not even a big fan of that. Talk to CATERHAM here, who actually has some idea how to calculate these things. Personally, if I want a 40 grade oil, I buy a 40 grade oil.

10w40. More like 40w-40. I would not put that stuff in any engine I want to keep.
Dude. Your valve guides are cooked. It's a known issue. If you know anything about these engines I'd suggest pulling it apart and getting it fixed. The car is worth the expense.
Or sell it and try again. Simple.

Or go to the mustang site "the corral". Your heads are called "c" heads. Buy a used pair, get new valve guides installed or you can buy brand new ones for 1500 bucks, install them and enjoy life.
No matter how you cut the dice here you have a problem. If you buy new heads you can sell yours for 500 since they go for that easily all day long, and re-coup some of your expenses.
If you drive it like it is you are going to drop a valve and blow the engine.
Do what you want. We have informed you the best we can. What you do with the info is up to you.

Yeah, sounds about right. Pay good money for your 5W20. Then pay a bunch more money for the LOS. Then end up with something roughly equivalent to a cheapish 10W40.

What's the point though? What do you gain over just buying 10W40 to begin with, if that's what you want.

You have to either fix the heads or turn the radio up. Oil can help to some extent with lifter noise but it wont do squat for a valve guide noise. I have never seen one drop a valve because of this but im sure it could but it would be too late at that point

I have tried it and wouldn't again. There was no benefit. It is pretty much gear oil. After I didn't see any benefit in an engine, I then dumped this stuff in my 5 speed manual transmission as gear oil top off...LOL

Ok I hadn't read the OP's other post. Now I see it's to try and quieten a tick.

A thicker oil may help, but I don't see any advantages in using the LOS rather than just using a heavier oil to begin with, if that's what you want.

There's plenty of thick oils out there already without bothering with additives like LOS. Hey we just love the thick stuff here in Oz. You could go crazy with something like this

I would guess something more like a 20w-40 or 20w-30

Most of those oil thickeners don't hold their viscosity at operating temperatures (their viscosity index is low). They really thicken at colder temps. I ran a few through the viscosity mixing calculator and was surprised at what I saw.

You do realize that by replacing one qt with LOS,you are dilluting the additive pack? Less Zinc, less Moly,Less Boron....etc.You are basically adding mineral oil with nothing in it.

I tested a number of these so called viscosity index improvers and did not like what I saw. In addition, they have be implicated in the formation of varnish that can cause a ring to stick. In other words; don't use the stuff at any time. Sorry STP and Lucas.

I think they'd be more accurately referred to as viscosity index trashers, or they could use a catch phrase, stating how you can magically turn a multigrade oil into a straight grade with one white bottle!

LUCAS professional race synthetic oils are good. I am the polar opossite of a LUCAS fanboy, but their pro stuff reads legit ( though I havent run it). Actually LUCAS latest API PCMO tested well by pqi too, limited as the test is.
