Lubricating a swinging gate hinge

This is the hinge for a 10' swinging gate.

I see a little nylon plug in the barrel. I am thinking I should be able to pull out the plug and screw in a Zerk fitting. But the hole is too small and does not look threaded.

But I am almost certain that that little nylon plug has something to do with lubricating the hinge.

I just have not figured out what.

I am also thinking the hinge was installed upside down. It looks like the weight of the gate should be resting on a surface that looks like the top of the gate, not the bottom of the hinge. But possible the top is the same as the bottom and with the weight on the bottom it just looks different than the top.

looks like if you could take a bottom tap and try to cut some threads in the hinge,or take apart and thread in a zerk.or even some oil from a old style oil can. have seen some rubber tipped grease gun attachments (fit on the grease gun fitting) that you may need to trim off part of the tip and maybe force some grease in this. not sure what they are called.

But what is the brownish dot in the hole thats in the middle of the barrel? It must have something to do with lubricating the hinge.

I am trying to find the manufacturer and see what they say.

I think this was a cheap hinge on a pair of gates that cost $10K.

If not oiling… for tension adjustment

The hole in the barrel is for a brass pin that holds a rod in place holding everything together.

The manufacturer suggests a non oil based lubricant. I will find some liquid silicone and dribble it in from the top.
