Lube Control and huge oil consumption!

I posted this at another thread but I believe that it would be better to post in a new thread!

Now, here is the situation.
I changed my oil in early Sep., put LC into my oil mid Sep. and now the oil has 1500mi on it.

The car is a 91 Accord with 142k mi, perfect condition except small leaks on the oil pan. Nothing really major (just change the radiator). No oil consumption (minus the leaks)! Check the ground were I parked, same thing - small oil spots.

I was shocked when 2 days ago, when I checked the dip stick, it was half way. Put about 3/4 qt in to get full mark. I had never seen a huge oil consumption since I got the car (late 2001).

As stated on the LC bottle: " In a few isolated cases, high mileage engines may temporarily consume oil."
However, on LC site board, LCD stated that "LC will increase oil consumption if the engine is damaged but in healthy engines it should help reduce ring coking which this engine is susceptible to." Something does seem logical to me!

Does that mean my engines is damage? or does LC damage my engine?

Act as an antioxide, why LC increase the oil consumption? Does it suppose to do the opposite, decrease oil consumption?

FP is giving me benefits but I guess LC gives me the opposite!

LC may be thinning the oil out somewhat allowing it to escape where it couldn't prior.Or maybe the oil pan gasket needs to be changed.

It's probably the latter.
 
The one time I ran LC, it was in a relatively new engine that doesn't normally consume too much oil. Oil consumption was way up with LC.

I believe it's an effect similar to many new users of synthetic. Cleaning and "capturing/dissolving" of organic debris is more easily allowed past the piston rings.
 
Looking at the VOA again I have a hard time beliving this stuff doesn't thin out the host somewhat.For Pete's sake it ain't even a 20W oil!
 
I believe this is the seal cleaning effect. More common with AutoRX. The Theory is, your seal is sealing with a "false seal" of sludge build up. If there is a major cleaning effect(in your case LC), the "false seal" is dissolved, which may temporarily or permanently(depending on the condition of your actual seal), and you car leaks. Your best bet is continue LC use until proper seal is established, or replace the seal if needed.

The same thing happened to me with AutoRX(seem my post in this section), I was told I needed another treatment, which unfortunately never got done.

I agree...it's probably cleaning that's going on that accounts for the consumption (similar to that seen with synthetics)...unless, the engine is worn...
 
Cleaning. Continue to use LC until condition stablizes. What oil are you useing? This initial oil consuption effect has been seen with Auto-Rx as well. It should go away with time as the engine cleans up!

P.S. If the oil pan bolts keep loosening consider some lock-tite. If it is a gasket best to replace it and be done with it!

As I stated before, the leaks just about the same by looking at the ground where I parked my car. If 3/4qt ended up there within 1 1/2 month, it would be noticale. In fact, the oil leak may not because of the seal, the oil pan nuts loosen and everytime I tighten it up, it stopped!

As for the false seal, I see no new leak!

Thus meaning that the oil is being burned and not "just" leaking.

This is pretty normal--Especially if the valve stem seals were filthy with a false seal. And you wouldn't see this unless you disassembled your engine.
 
LC in the prescribed treatment rate does not reduce host oil viscosity.

As others have stated, false seals are being removed by the cleaning action of LC.
 
Interesting old post. I just began an LC routine in my wife's Honda CR-V with 67k miles. I did note consumption for the first 1000 miles or so but after that it stopped. The thing got nothing but M1 at 3k intervals for it's first 60k miles.

Hmmm. Whatever, it's better now but glad to know that's what may have been going on.
 
Yep. Well, the V is clean as a whistle on the inside of the valve cover. But perhaps it cleaned the rings a bit and slid right out.
 
I have been using LC in a few various vehicles since coming to BITOG. The most Interesting experince occured recently when I added 6 oz to the factory fill in my then 400 mile old 2006 Tacoma. My wife got in the passenger seat and happened to roll the window down when I started the truck, a few seconds later a short duration cloud of smoke came out the exhuast pipe and then went away. My wife gave me one of those scornfull "you better stop messing with the engine" looks but That was a one timne occurence wierdly after adding LC to a very new engine. I believe it was not so mixed with the oil when some of it got sprayed on the pistins clylinder bore area and whizzed right by. No problems since. Just sjows that even on a brand new vehicle LC you can have an incident.
Every vehicle I have tried it in it has initially used some oil then stopped using by the first or second maintenance dose. I will continue to use this product with confidence. With todays hotter running engiens with oil being sprayed directly on these hot areas we need all thge antioxidant help we can get.
