Low cost decent tires?

A big surprise have been Sumitomo's. I bought a set from TireRack and I think I like them better than the Generals.

Cheap new tires, Douglas tires at Walmart. Not bad, since your plans are for 2 years.
 
General Altimax RT 43 are really good inexpensive tires. They are better than most tires that cost much more. Good in snow, good handling. Maybe a tad stiffer than some mushy tires if that matters.
 
Just picked up a set of Yokohama's from DTD off eBay for my wife's Hyundai Elantra. $100 off when you spend min $400. + free shipping. It was $308 to my door. No sales tax either! Will try to get them mounted this week or next.

I always look for the category of tires that is decent (good TR ratings, I don't care about snow traction) and check for seasonal sales starting a few months before I need them. Usually I'll find a decent tire among a group of good tires for a heavy discount. No brand loyalty here.
