Loves and Flying J are not Top Tier

A lot big enough to accommodate trucks with trailers, and loyalty rewards.l to keep ‘em coming back.

When I lived in DE, my go to gas and diesel was the Flying J in Carney’s Point, NJ.

They always had superior pricing.

This morning they’re asking $4.059 for diesel! $2.939 for RUG.

The high volume station near my home is asking $3.399 for diesel, and the Costco near me is $2.739 for RUG. Higher priced places around me, like Wawa stations (whose prices also tend to not be competitive) are far lower than truck stops.

I guess they’re baking the free showers and trucking lounge into the per gallon cost of fuel?



I used to always tank up at the Sheetz in King George, VA on the US 301. Texes are lower there on fuel so the prices were good, sometimes even marginally cheaper than NJ. I always wondered why. I guess they really don’t do much with their fuel… their business profit approach must be different from, say, Wawa, who is not competitive on fuel price.

I think most truckers are on a discount program with Loves, Pilot etc.

That's accurate.
They may go beyond the minimum additive package.
However, they are not a Top Tier provider because they did not pay the money and go through the gyrations to make the list.
Thus, they are not on the Top Tier list.

Hung out in the day at all of those places. Shot Field Target at Eagles Nest Farm...1300 acres in King George VA.... hung out at Friendly's in my youth near Cow Town....

Here TT gas is as cheap or cheaper than the no names and thus it makes no sense not to go to TT.
8 miles north to Oxford PA. TT is 30 cents cheaper than Highs no name fuel here in MD

I noticed similar price spreads on my last road trip Michigan to Florida and back. I don't understand how these truck stops keep the non trucker business.

It is smoke and mirrors. As @loneryder mentioned, most truckers use fuel discount programs, and get steep discounts from many of the big truck stop stations, Loves and Flying J included. These same companies jack up their prices, so then it gives the appearance to the truckers that they are getting big discounts on fuel. That 10 cent discount that @oilstained mentioned getting at Loves, becomes a pretty small discount, when the price of gas at Loves is compared to neighboring stations. That is the situation here in my area at least.

Plus, I get a 10 cent discount from the local Chevron stations, so I get TT for less than I could at Loves, even with their 10 cent discount.

Besides not being TT, this is one of the reasons I avoid Loves stations. I despise businesses that play games with pricing.

I don’t care if the gasoline I buy is TT.

I only care about filling up and driving.

I avoid sketchy gas stations if they had TT gas for $1 per gallon.

Especially for people towing travel trailers with gasser trucks. That's one thing I do look at when I plan a trip. The big stations are usually so much easier in and out.

And

You're not THAT butthole that is blocking 50% of the pumps.

Flying J and Pilot are the same organization. Not that either can't use different fuel suppliers or additives, but I suspect every drop of fuel used at eithe location comes from the same refinery with same additives.

IIRC Flying J/ Pilot also own a refinery.

I did run 2 company cars on Sheetz gas with no problems. Used Jiffy Lube also.
