When you're in the car that's how it sounds but if your outside of the car it's just a loud bang as you don't hear all the carnage afterwards. Seen/heard it happen a million times while at the strips.

Just a guess, but I suspect that in that sort of event a bunch of very small pieces of hot rubber are ejected into the air and make a little fireball.

A friend of mine blew the engine in a demolition derby car trying to get unstuck. On the video (before the youtube days) you could see a bright white flash underneath when the pieces came out.

Always liked the big flash and loud shotgun blast between high RPM shifts from the after burner on the RX-3 rotary engines. Freaked a lot of people out who followed those cars.
