got a call from my boss yesterday asking me to leave my access card on my cleaning cart when i was done because new ones were being issued. so i asked how will i get in the building and he said we will meet you and give you a new one. so i went in early to talk to a guy that works down the street for the same company. he said well they are getting rid of you but were going to call you after work tonight and tell you. so i called the boss and talked to him he said the reason was because they have a relative who's wife just left him and he has no money and offered to do my job for a dollar less pay. so i got canned. I've been applying for jobs all day and have a little part-time gig i am interviewing for tomorrow. but i am pretty upset with the whole situation. everyone said i did the best work of anyone they've ever had. the hiring manager for the company we clean for told me last night that she was not happy and even expressed concern because they were completely happy with my performance. she said that at the end of the contract in January they will be hiring a new company because the one i worked for was so inconsistent and stupid. all in all its probably for the best but this not a good time to be unemployed. just wanted to share this experience with you guys i hope you never work for a shady company.

Missouri is a right to work state. They can do that.

I'm sorry to hear that... Keep your head up and shoot for the stars, i don't know what kind of companies exist in your area, but you might want to look into maybe working for a local university or community college. I have friends at two different universities on the east coast who get 100% free tuition up to a PhD along with full time benefits\pay. It might be worth for you to pursue something like that and get "free" training for a field in higher demand. I wish you luck!

Might you be able to get a contract directly for the company you cleaned for? They were happy with your performance. Sounds like there is an opportunity there for you.

There is opportunity out there if you're willing to do what it takes to make it happen. While I was out and about over the weekend I passed at least 6 help wanted signs-everything from an autobody repair shop to a moving company.
I've always found that situations like that lend themselves to a better opportunity that would have otherwise been missed. Pick yourself up, learn from it, brush it off, and then move forward. In the end you'll be better off because of it.

This will be the first of many situations where your good, hard, honest work will be let go because of politics and relationships among managers. Chalk it up as a learning lesson, and don't think it won't happen again once you have a good job and a degree. Gotta just move on and look for something else.
ill recover. my plan is to just keep pounding the pavement. starting my own business would be nice but i doubt i can afford it.

Good luck. With a reason like that, I'd imagine you would be able to collect unemployment. Hopefully some dumb rule doesn't mess you up.
I guess you could go back to scrapping and a few other things to make ends meet. You'll figure it out.

you already kind of got over it since you are already looking for alternatives.
please check with the former company if they want to direct-contract you (already suggested by others) or if they know somebody who could do the same (and place a recommendation phone maybe...)
if you go that route, eljefino and other members can give lots of advices on getting stuff way under price.
also since you survived cleaning after others behinds you can handle a lot more than average joe.

i did want to share i went to the career center today to look for job listings. and for the first 15 minutes it was hear try this program and that one to . i had a stack of papers about every form of assistance you could imagine. when the lady was done i just said "all i need is a job do you have any of those" i am not the type who willing crys for help i can and will make it on my own. back to topic, how would i go about starting my own janitorial business? i really dont know.

This happens very often, and since the boss wants to hire a relative and $1 less than you, there is nothing you can do about it. Even in a right to work state he should have at least give you some compensation so you are not suddenly stuck without income. It is not the law but some basic humanity to not be an a-hole.
I'm not sure starting a business that he is not planning to be in the long run is going to solve his current financial problem. You can talk to the company that gave the contract to your former employer and see if they have any contact in other companies. Since they are happy with you they can at least be your reference, and that would help a lot.
