I only started doing the final tightening with my torque wrench about five years ago. Prior to that I just used my four-way wrench. I used to try to tighten as evenly as I could, but I am too strong for such intricacies and am sure I was overtightening. No matter how tight I made them I never had any trouble breaking them loose later. Regardless of how accurate my torque wrench is it allows me to make them evenly tight.
I have twisted off more than my share of bolt heads in my life. There is such a thing as too much leverage. As badly as people on here have criticized, I still use light machine oil on my lug nut threads to prevent locking. Through several cars and thirty years it has worked flawlessly and I've never left a wheel on the highway, so...
