The filters are apparently all OK, some are GOOD, and then there are those for longer periods between changes. By almost all accounts, a Fram will get you 3000 miles, adequate, but more is taking a chance. Once you SEE what's inside, you'll be more comfy with ST filters from WallyWorld (they're of cardboard, too, but supposedly a "better" filter, but cheaper by far), Purolators of every stripe ARE better, they have metal endcaps instead of cardboard/epoxy holding them together. Media seems to be largly the same with most of them, the differences being construction of the can, endcaps and bypass spring methods (which get argued until the cows come home).
Then, you get to the filters that handle smaller particles such as Purolator PureOnes and then Donaldsons, and of course, Amsoils, which list for 15.00 or so, contain synthetic fibers for smaller particle filtration and higher (advertised) capacity. Those cans are class 1 hardened facilities, too, you can't break them if you run a train over em. A moot point for you, if you're sick of paying a lot for a filter.
Watch the bypass setting, make sure it matches your OEM filter setting, it can be somewhat lower than stock, supposedly (say, 8-11 PSI vs. an OEM filter's bypass setting of 12-16), but folks in the know here don't want you going HIGHER than the OEM bypass pressure.
Good Luck!
