Depends on needs. I have a lot of high end audio stuff (and portable audio stuff)... you can pick up a Sansa Fuze for cheap. Great battery life, decent SQ, very very small, and easy to transfer music to. If you want a touch screen interface, 4G iPod Touches can be had cheap (I hate iTunes, but iPod Touches are fantastic to use). Samsung and Sony both make decent portable music players, as well.

So it all depends...if you want the best technology, SONY, Apple, and Samsung all have a nice selection running over $100. For cheap, small, and good battery life...think Sansa Fuze (with a memory card which can be picked up cheaply).

There gets to a point where those players are the same price as a small tablet. So how much is portability worth to you?

If you are wasting hard earned dollars on a smartphone, why dont you use that for MP3s?

I like the older Sony units WITHOUT some multimedia screen becaus of the sound quality. That, and I can just put normal MP3s on it and go.

So far, this one looks the closest: NWZ-B172F (F means FM radio)

I'm not sure who suggested I was getting a smartphone? I am leaving the computer purchase idea for "down the road."

Headphones will probably have the biggest impact on sound quality in this. Most of the headphones that come with these players are terrible. But maybe you already have a pair of decent headphones that you can use with this new player. If not, that's where your money should go.

So what phone do you have? I recall threads where you were selling and doing stuff on rooted and reflashed smartphones...

Apparently you had an iphone 4 before...

iPhone 4 would have the best SQ most likely. Good quality DACs used and the implementation was great.

If you're looking for headphones, earbuds, or IEMs, that's a whole 'nother thread haha.
