Looking for Oil Recommendations for New V10 Motor

Hello,
I just had a new V10 put into my 2005 F-350. I would like to know what oil you guys would use in this motor. Most of my driving is in city with a monthly or bi-monthly camping trip pulling a toy hauler trailer. Cost or type of oil is not important but quality is. The motor replacement was very costly so I want to protect my investment as best I can.
 
First question is why did you need to replace it? If it was some sort of a use-related issue, then this may drive the selection.

While on a trip to the desert while towing my trailer something in the bottom end let go. The dealer would have torn it down to find out what exactly let go at a rate of $90.00 per hour plus the cost of replacing the motor if need be once the problem was pin pointed. I chose to forgo the tear down and just replace the motor. By the way I was using royal purple 5w20 at the time so needless to say I will not be using royal purple again.
 
Unless you are bound by a warranty, i would run pennzoil yellow for 1000 miles then any good synthetic, like mobil 1 or pennzoil ultra. I don't run any 20w oil in escape, i run 0w30 in the winter and 5w 40 rotella t-6 in the summer.
 
OK, so there was an issue that arose towing. Perhaps due to excessive oil temperatures, poor flow, overload, etc.

I think your selection was sound in that you were running a syn 20wt versus conventional for HD towing in the desert. I'd go with M1 or amsoil most likely if I were in your situation.

If you tend to do more towing in the desert in the summer, I'd also consider two-a-year oil changes, running a 5w-20 or 0w-20 in the winter and 0w- or 5w30 in the summer.
 
Mobil 1 0w40 or Mobil 1 0w30. The former is designed for high temp, high power output usage. A little overkill? Perhaps

The folks have camper with 6.8L V10. The owners manual calls for an HD. I guess it depends on the load.

BTW......Did Ford do away with the V10 on the redesign of their truck engines?

You're implying that RP had something to do with your engine failure, and I'm not sure it did. It would have been nice to have the engine torn down to diagnose the cause of the failure.

Just out of interest, if this was a brand new engine, do you mind telling us how much it cost?
 
I would use at least a thin 30wgt like Castrol EDGE 5w30, it just seems you would need a more robust oil in that vehicle. I personally would use a 30-40 wgt. But I would recommend Castrol EDGE 5w30 it is a good oil and is thick enough while not deviating from your spec very far. I am amazed they spec such a light wgt oil for that vehicle. 5w30 Castrol EDGE all year long.

Exactly. Use the oil Ford specs for the engine. They know what works best for their engines and have millions of miles testing the oil they spec, towing and in hot and cold climates.
 
I wouldn't use 5w20 if that's what they call for. Use 5w30. 5w20 is strictly for CAFE as far as I know.

I think there is one best oil for a gasoline engine powered vehicle. Mobil 1 0w-40. I'd use Mobil 1 0w-40 if I were you.

I betcha it was a reman. The Ford reman gas engines have a 3yr unlimited mile warranty as of a few months ago.
