Escapes look like they do the AWD/rear wheel thing right. Do 13-Present Escapes have that same DCT trans that the Focus does that stinks?

They have automatics and not the DCT. I haven't heard of the issue as much with the escapes, but some other AWD fords have issues with the PTU (power transfer unit). basically the small fluid capacity combined with high temps burns them up. Might not be as widespread with the escapes. I would look for one with the 2.0. A friend leased one with the 1.6 and while it was OK, hers was FWD and still not stellar power. The 2.0 with AWD would be perfect.

The reason the Honda is so much more popular is because VW can not come close to it in reliability. The Honda will still be on the road decades after the VW is in a junk yard.

I would try to get a CX-5 or Rav-4.Not sure what's available for 10k.

I've read a few Horror stories about the CRV, so try hard to avoid them.

+1. No comparison between Subaru AWD and anyone mentioned except perhaps for the VW/Audi based 4-motion. Won't find one of those for the bargain basement price, though. And I'll place Subaru ahead of VW in terms of reliability even considering the internet amplified oil burning issue. In places where AWD matters, Subaru dominates the other value class producers in sales as they outperform other AWD's.

if you are buying for yourself get CX5 for example, if you bring for your wifey than CRV is your way to go; things that go in favor for CRV include its space, functionality, fuel efficiency, low cost of maintenance in the long run, and highest resale value of top of my head;

looks at it this way, BMW X3 brand new cost up front much more than CRV; however, after 10 years and past 100K miles for example, CRV fares far better in value for your hard earn $$$

Subaru Crosstrek. The footprint is not much bigger than a Civic, so it will probably feel just as easy to drive and park.

The CR-V's AWD problems are exaggerated. I looked into it when I was thinking of buying one in 2014, and there are plenty of videos online of the car transferring power to the rear wheels in bad conditions.

From what I read and saw in Youtube videos, the problem is that it's only designed to occasionally send power to the rear wheels, so the transmission overheats fast and switches back to FWD if it has to do more than that. I watched a video of someone trying to climb a sandy hill in a Forester and a CR-V, and the Forester spun all four wheels until it could climb no higher, whereas the CR-V almost immediately turned on the AWD overheat light and stopped trying.

But you shouldn't be doing that with a CR-V anyway. It's not what the car is designed for (and the Forester is officially only designed to go anywhere there's a road, not off-road over sand).

They are miserable cars. My grandmother had a 2011, it was in immaculate condition. It rode like a horse carriage and was horribly underpowered. If you're tall, you won't be comfortable, because the front seats don't scoot back very far. The stereo was a joke and a $20 battery powered radio from Walmart would have been better.

But for my grandma it was perfect because she just needed a little run around car that was as easy for her to get in and out of.

I wonder of something was wrong with it,or it it had a different K24 than my Accord? When I give mine some juice,it pulls like a big bore two stroke dirt bike. Crazy power band!!

Sometimes I wonder. Off the line it was great, but once you were on the highway or in the mountains, it sucked!

Crosstrek is a really nice looking vehicle. Interior is gorgeous.

And a side note, wife has a 2018 Maxima as a rental. Dang I'm impressed Nissan. Interior quality is miles ahead of years ago.
