The Avalon will probably see 10k mile OCIs every 6-7 months. The Grand Caravan will get a yearly oil change at 5,000 miles or so.

Grand Caravan has an oil leak so I might have them do the oil change next week while they have it, since if it's the oil pan they've got to put new oil in it anyways. I'll make sure they do the filter if that's the situation.

I might go OEM for the Avalon. It's got a 7 year 125k mile warranty so I'll be documenting everything.

I've used many different brands of cartridge filters and the fram extra guard is perfectly good for 5,000 miles. I also found a cheap Chinese filter made by GKI that seems to work as well. Any filter that doesn't have a reputation for tearing should be fine if you are going to change it every 5k.

I wanted to pick up an OEM filter for the Avalon but I had time yesterday (Sunday) to change the oil so I picked up a Wix at O'Reillys.

It will be the last Wix cartridge filter I ever use. It fit around the center tube of the filter housing very loosely and it was stamped on the filter "Made in China"

OEM from here on out...

Need to do the Grand Caravan now.

@Nick1994, the Wix XP is made in Poland, if that's any better

I'll check for it.

I originally went to Walmart for a Fram Ultra for the Avalon but they didn't have one

Speaking of cartridge fit issues ... Has anyone else noticed some of them have a skewed shape, right out of the box? That is, the top end cap is not directly above the bottom end cap when it's resting on a horizontal surface? I see that with at least two brands (not Wix) and made in USA. On some I measured, the sides are as much as about 2° from perpendicular to the ends. That type defect would seem to present an opportunity for oil to bypass on the side that doesn't seat properly in the housing at the ends.

I once looked at an STP filter for my X3; it was stamped "Made in Malaysia" and cost $1.50 more than the OEM filter- which is made in Germany and comes with a new drain plug gasket as well as a new o-ring for the cap.

If you're referring to my previous post about skewed filters ...
I'd hope that the crooked ones would tend to straighten out in use due to stresses imposed by the way they fit in the housing, combined with being soaked in hot oil. In my car, the housing surface that seats against the end of the filter seems to be rigidly perpendicular to the center tube on one end, and only slightly free to tilt at the other end. When the centerline through the filter isn't square with its end surfaces, something has to shift or there could be gaps through which oil can bypass.
