Get seat heaters from Rostra and install them yourself.
I would also consider a 2nd gen (04-09) Prius. The 07-09 are fairly reliable cars and are great for road trips due to their versatility. Simple modifications to the suspension (i.e. chassis brace) can make the car handle much better than what you would expect.

Amen brother...from a guy who was fooled not twice, but three times. No more Deutsche VW/Audi junk for me. Better off going with a used Honda or Toyota than any new Teutonic money pit.
Don't get me wrong, German cars are some of the best driving cars on the road; however, keeping them out of the repair shop is not humanly possible. I love working on my own cars, but not every other weekend out of necessity!

If you have enclosed storage, a practical new car isnt a bad idea. If it will be sitting outside in a parking lot, it is another story, why subject a nice new car to that?
My wife's and brother's rabbit/golf TDI have been great cars so far.
I like the idea of a subaru. More interesting, all weather, quality cars. A camry is so vanilla. Id look for an 04-ish accord 4 cyl MT if looking for a car like that. Problem is that the deals on these cars are so poor, it may not be worth a purchase versus new or another vehicle.
This generation jetta is $4k cheaper than the previous one. Austerity is nice but what did they take out? It has a solid rear axle but that's not $4k there.

What you want is a used Jaguar. Inexpensive to purchase and very nice.
You can buy a brand new Ford Fiesta for under $20k. Great gas millage too. And they seem to get very good reviews. BTW, have you been keeping an extra coat of wax on the front of your vehicle? For the prehistoric bugs & (Love bugs) down there?

Anyone have experience with the recent Hyundai's? The Santa Fe is looking pretty appealing and with us going out to ranges and such, I think it would be great to have a vehicle with the extra storage capability and to drive around the muddy ranges.

A Kia Forte.Good mpg at 27/37 has the ipod connections you're looking for and heated seats can be had for about 1600 along with a power moon roof,fog lamps and will price out around 20k. Kia makes a very dependable well built car, have owned 2 in the past. Unemployment forced me to sell them or i would still be in them. There hopefully will be a new Forte in my yard in the next year or so.

What about a Lexus RX? Or a Highlander? Both can be had for under 20k, if buying used. And are extremely reliable.

Well, according to people here, Hyundai can be a mixed bag. I've never owned one, but the ones I've sat in were only okay. They used to be decent cars for cheap money, but that's no longer the case. Their prices are on par with legacy brands, but I don't think they've reached the build or materials quality to command that.

If you're going to drop $20k on a road-trip car, look hard at a Cruze Eco MT. It's a good efficient road-trip car. I can drive 100+ miles a day in mine for work several days a week, and still feel good. It also gets roughly 40 mpg in that driving. It's not the fastest, although it is competitive for its class. Passing/highway acceleration is its forte, not WOT blasting. On the highway, it's a quiet, well-riding car that rolls up the miles effortlessly.
Complaints are that the transmission can be a bit rough-shifting and clunky. It's certainly no Honda/Mazda manual transmission. It's just a quirk that I've learned to live with. It works just fine, but does not work terribly smoothly. Too bad that GM couldn't make a smoother-shifting manual, as it's a major letdown in otherwise nice car.
