Hyundai Santa Fe & Tucson

Anyone have recent experience with the newer versions? I'll be getting off deployment in a few months and I'll just have my 2003 Z06. I will need a car that will have more practical applications.

Was wondering if it's worth going with the AWD model vs. the FWD model.

The 10 year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty seems very tempting. It seems that dollar for dollar, Hyundai gives you more creature comforts vs. Honda and Toyota.

Car would be used mostly for daily commuting as well as some road trips ~1000 miles each way or so.

Wife and I own a 2010 Santa Fe and Tucson.

Tucson is good for my wife running around shopping and meets her needs.

I recommend that you get the Santa Fe with the V-6 Engine or take a look at the new KIA Sorento. The 2012 KIA Sorento is out and has the same engine and transmission as the Santa Fe. I am planning on buying a 2012 Sorento EX V6 before long myself.

Both have a active duty military incentive for the service member and spouse.

I recommend the forester. Good power,fuel mileage and room. and can be had with a stick for under 21 out the door. if you dont need AWD for winter driving skip it. The Forester comes with it.

I'd pick their Kia counterparts. They seem to get better reviews, and look much better IMO.

My father-in-law has the last generation Sorento v6 4wd(2004 or 2005). He has put over 120k miles on it with zero issues. He loves it and will most likely buy a new one in the next year or two. I drove it and it drives nice. Only drawbacks are interior materials and layout (looks like this has been addressed in the new model), mpg is very low (this might be improved as well) and the need to replace the timing belt every 60k miles (expensive).

I think Hyundai/Kia are good cars if you can get them for the right price. Personally, I don't know why anyone would consider an SUV/CUV and not get the 4wd version. If you don't need 4wd consider a wagon or minivan that will provide more room and better mpg.

I now have 24000 km on mine (see my sig) with no issue other than an alternator recall. Been to Florida and back twice with it. It even took me through a harsh Montreal winter with good winter tires and FWD.

AWD is not mandatory for commuting and road trips and car won't be less safe without it. I get 27 MPG US on road trips.

The Santa Fe is roomier and more comfortable than the Tucson if this is what you want. The Kia Sorento offers an alternative if you like the looks better or depending on deals/incentives localy available.
