This is for a 2012 Polaris Ranger 800 XP that I picked up a few months ago.
I don't feel comfortable purchasing the Polaris branded oil - They used to call it 2W50, now since I'm assuming they got called out on it, they call it 5W50. Either way, what would you say to use?
Redline 5W50
Mobil 1 5W50
Rotella 5W40?
something different?

Mobil or Castrol 0W-40? Depends how much cold performance you need or are concerned about. There’s always Mobil and Castrol 5W-50 if you want 50 weight.

I service a friend’s Polaris Ranger with Mobil 1 0W-40 annually. I just drain the reservoir and dump two quarts in. Never a problem ever. One time I used Pennzoil Platinum 0W-40. No difference.

I used Mobil 1 15W-50 in my RZR because 5W-50 wasn't on the shelf. Works fine in the desert.

Thanks for the replies. I run this thing pretty hard in the hot Michigan summers, and it gets under 0 F here during the bitter cold hunting seasons, so I was thinking a decent viscosity range would work for me - I'm just not sure which direction (0 or 50).
I'm probably leaning towards the Mobil 0-40, just because it's relatively available, but I'd like to try a few different oils over the next few years out of curiosity and to check some reports.

Can’t go wrong with either 0W-40. Around here, Castrol seems to be regarded as “better” over the new M1 version.

I use Mobil 1 15w-50 in my last 2 rzr's. One 800, one 900. Most miles are from northern WI trails. The 800 did plow duty in winter from unheated garage. The 900 see very very little winter use, and sits in heated garage anyway.

I use 0w-40 in my fathers Sportsman 600 because it see quite a bit of winter use, as well as summer use. Work machine, no trail use.

The Polaris branded oil, made by Lubrication Technologies in MN, has been shown to shear quickly on the rzr forums.

IMO any of your choices or 15w-50 will be fine.

Any oil with a 45 viscosity spread is probably going to shear like crazy. I can't believe Polaris still recommends it.
If I had a Polaris, I'd run 15w50 8 months out of the year, and I'd change it every 15 hours.

To the OP:
The reason Polaris had such unusual winter viscosity numbers was an attempt to make ignorant oil people think they absolutely had to buy Polaris brand oil because none of the other brands had the proper numbering on the bottle. It worked....for awhile. Now, I heard they have gone to suggesting 5w50, which still in of itself isn't all that easy to find outside of Polaris brand.

Every 15 hrs?? I'd have to change it 2-3 times a month in the warmer months.

I change mine every spring. Usually around 100 hrs.

Ever had a used oil analysis done on it with 100 hours? If it's anything like my vtwin Kawie, it shears conventional 10w40 down to a light 30/heavy 20 in less than half that time. And a 15w50 has even a higher spread than 10w40. A 5w50 is worse still.
A good syn like Amsoil Metric stayed in 40 range after 50 hours, but just barely.
A couple of quarts of oil, changed every three or four rides is cheap insurance to get the maximum life out of a quad (if you're into that sort of performance).
I'm just glad my manufacturer recommends 10w40, and approves 15w50 and 20w50 if needed.
