Looking for a nice dress watch...

Your BX should have a decent selection of watches. The NEX in Norfolk carries Tag-Heuer, Seiko, Citizen and others, all at a good price with no sales tax.

I would keep the price to modest - in the $200 - 300 range. You go spending big $$ on a watch when you're young, and should be saving for a 1st house, next car, investing, etc. it hints to me (though perhaps not to the young lady in question) that your priorities are off. Some girls are impressed by bling and impulsiveness...but the ones worth keeping are impressed by your prudent judgement. I recommend that you demonstrate to her that you're interested in quality, not show...

By the way, my 10 year old titanium Seiko still works just great.

Not sure why you told him to avoid an expensive watch but recommended Tag, who is in my opinion, one of the most overpriced and overhyped brands on the market today.

Not trying to impress any lady?
Just got out of a engagement.
The last thing I try to do is flash money to impress women.
I want a nice watch, to keep and wear only when I'm either dressed up, or in my ASUs. It's one of those things like a pocket knife, if I ever have a son, and it comes his wedding day or graduation or what not, I want it to last to pass on...
I again, don't want something to flash to get a girl... If that was the case, I wouldn't be driving in a beat up ford ranger or a SXT model dart, I'd have a F3whatever Harley power stroke ecotech edition truck and a limited or Rallye dart... Or a viper or something.

How long do those cells last vs. a solar? Thanks. I like the solar offerings from Citizen and Seiko.

I think about five years. There is an energy cell (maybe a capacitor) that is recharged by your hand movement. Aside from that its a quartz movement. The "charge" will last about 3-4 days if the watch is off your hand.

Its is waterproof but not a scuba watch. I take showers and snorkel with it on.

I send mine back to COSERV when it needs an energy cell. They replace the cell, any needed gaskets and pressure test it. COSERV is Seiko warranty repair for the USA. Not going to bring it to some bozo at a local store.

Charge in most Citizen Eco drives is up to 6 months .

Our family owns several Citizen Eco drives and never a problem .

Citizen makes some pretty bold claims about the Eco-Drives never needing a battery change. I have a few myself and like them a lot.

I'm not wearing anything $500 on my arm as I tend to ruin stuff like that easily.

+1. Have worn Seikos for years. My current Seiko dress watch is 10 years old, looks good, keeps great time and I still get compliments on it.

I really know very little about watches, but my brother bought me a Tissot as a gift when he was stationed in Switzerland, about 10 years ago. It's a very nice watch and has held up well.

Visiting him there was also the nicest vacation I've ever taken.

Anecdotal tests I've seen indicated that the current-generation Eco-Drive batteries will still deliver half their rated capacity after 10 years. That's pretty impressive.

Dparm, wasn't recommending Tag per se, just illustrating the good selection at the BX...lots of brands, great price, no tax. My recommendation was for restraint. My own Seiko was an example.

That's partly from my own experience in the military. I have lots of young sailors with financial trouble: can't pay bills, don't have cash and in my line of work, that's bad for your career. It affects your ability to maintain a security clearance and it demonstrates a lack of responsibility. What continues to astonish me, is that I see these same kids in trouble wearing expensive watches, driving a 7 series BMW, S-class Mercedes, brand new 1 ton Dualie truck, etc....

I park my 1990 4Runner in the spot that's reserved for me on base. I have a 10 year old watch. I also have a substantial portfolio...and that's where the youngsters who want it all now are killing themselves...up to their eyeballs in lease payments and debt with no wiggle room...

Gumby Jarvis has done well for himself...I don't want him making the classic young sailor/soldier mistakes that I see over and over....

I don't mean to be rude, but isn't it kind of simple to use the internet to look at watches and read reviews instead of asking (and getting) all kinds of subjective opinions? I mean all the higher end watches are of good quality....after that it's just up to personal taste.
