Yeah, ASUS agreed to repair it under warranty, but that means I have to pay shipping to get it to them. I was hoping the online store I bought it from would just do a complete exchange since it's been less than 30 days from purchase date, alas, they don't seem to want to do that, so it looks like I'll have to dish out for the shipping charges. Anyway, no big deal.


They should send you a pre-paid box. That's how they do it in Canada. There is NO CHARGE to the end-user.

Correct, ASUS's warranty service has NO FEE for the end user. That includes shipping.

This may be true for their notebooks, but not netbooks (Eee PC). Eee PC has its own warranty terms:

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the warranty period on their netbooks is only 1 year as opposed to 2 years on notebooks.
 
Yeah, buydig.com had really good ratings, so I decided to give them a try, alas I did not read their return policy very carefully, so that's my fault. Anyway, I am sending it back to buydig and then will most likely repurchase it from Amazon.

Never overestimate a newbie! I decided to go with Debian, and spent hours yesterday trying to prepare an SD card, getting nowhere even with the help of my son in law the professional programer over the phone.

Today I pulled the ''SD card'' out that came in the EeePC. Duh, it doesn't have any contacts on it. It is just a chunk of plastic shaped like a card with SD on it.

Nope, though I'm sure many come with a 60-day trial. I know the ASUS ones do.

If I had to perform MS Office tasks on my tiny netbook, I would shoot myself, right after jabbing my eyes out with a red hot poker.
 
Microsoft Office 2000 is very good and very lean. It runs uber fast on anything nowadays. Under 1 second load times on my Mac using Crossover (!). Sure, it's not supported anymore, but if you need just those basic functions and don't need the Office bloat from the last 3 Office versions, Office 2000 is for you. I'm sure you can find a copy on eBay for cheap.
 
Well I thought I'd report that I'm typing this on a new Asus Eee PC. Intel Atom z520 1.33Ghz, 1GB RAM, 160gig hd and windows xp.

So far I love it!

Good call.

Bump up the ram to 2 gig and you'll be good to go! If you don't do anything heavy (multi-tasking) then 1 gig will be fine.

I'm impressed with these Netbooks. I use my wifes at least a few times a week and its amazing the speed that they work at.

I remember buying my first hard drive (A Seagate ST251) for "only" $499. And it was a BIG 40 mb drive! No more swapping 5.25 disks.

Now look at what the $$ buys...

5 months now on the replacement EeePC 1005 and the power supply died. Either I'm just having a lot of bad luck or these Asus netbooks aren't as good as some make them sound to be. Not gonna be buying another Asus again...
