I spent a bit of time looking at a range of Shell Oil Products USA (SOPUS). Currently , there are rebates available in the USA ( and hopefully still in Canada) for the SOPUS owned Pennzoil and Rotella products.
I looked at the products firstly from the viewpoint of Zinc and Phosphorus which we know are anti-wear elements.
The first product is Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. It has Z and P at 693 and 610 ppm. It's a typical D1G2 SN Plus rated motor oil. It had Calcium at 942 ppm which is low enough to work well with DI Turbo engines.
Moving up in Zinc and Phosphorus takes you to Pennzoil Ultra which has 836 and 709 Z and P, but now the Calcium is 2597 ppm, too high for the D1G2 and SN Plus rating. I guess not a big deal if it's not a DI Turbo, or is it a big deal to some.
The next move up for Zinc and Phosphorus is Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 which has 979 and 823 Z and P. The Calcium remains at 2505 ppm.
Finally, the next move is to Rotella T6 0-40.which has 1181 and 1125 Z and P. The Calcium is still over 2000, at 2133 ppm.
I believe all four of these products are SN rated. Their Kv100 are in order: 9.6, 10.2, 13.5, and 12.0 cST. The Moly concentrations are 82,56,56 and 5 ppm.
Anyway, there are all sorts of different attributes for these motor oils. I just wanted to organize them in terms of Zinc and Phosphorous. Hope that might have been useful to some. Comments?
