It appears that my daughter's 2005 Toyota Matrix is going to be a write-off after her accident last week. She was not injured thank God. She is looking at a 2013 Matrix with 120,000 km. Are there any known issues? I have looked at several review sites who each hold it in high regard. She is looking at an automatic not a manual. The manual does have some clutch problems.

So that model came with (2) different engines a 1.8 and a 2.4; the 1.8 is not the same one as her 2005.

If it has the 2.4 you might want to do some more research on when/if Toyota solved the oil consumption issue that plagued some models.

Toyota makes great cars, and the 2013 Matrix is no exception

I daily drive a 2009 Matrix with the 1.8. Has 86K miles on it, and runs like new. I use to average about 31 mpg mixed, but lately it's been closer to 29. Not quite sure why yet.

Not the most comfortable vehicle, but in terms of price and reliability as well as functionality, kind of hard to beat.

There is a chain rattle issue, that is more of an annoyance apparently. Not really sure what the deal is, but every once in awhile, about every 50th start or so, I get a weird sound at startup. Goes away immediately though, no affect on drive-ability.

This is the reason you get the noise http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/DownloadPdf?id=148137

By 2013 they worked out all the bugs on the 1.8

I wonder if that's easy enough for a DIY to do?

The noise hasn't happened recently, but I would like to fix it permanently.

She ended up purchasing a 2007 Mazda 3 with the 2.3 L engine. I still think she will miss her Matrix. That thing had a ton of useable hatch space with the rear seats down!
