Friend's dad gets high 20s on his 2012 Highlander Hybrid.

But for the money and hassle, I would just get a normal Highlander and save the $$. This is one of those examples where the payback doesn't exist, as by the time it happens, you're going to be near battery replacement time.

Also, I believe the battery warranty on these is only 100k since it is not PZEV.

You will, if you get an R-Class Daimler. 5-year old go for less than a half-price around here. There is a reason, i guess. We tried to use them in livery service: superb vehicle when it runs.
I would look at X5 diesel just in case.
