Per AMSOil recommendations, I am using an SD44 on a 1990 Jeep Cherokee (I-6), and an SD42 on a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee (V8 H.O.). I would like to use longer filters to increase capacity.

What longer filters should I use?

Thanks.

Nothing bigger on the SDF-44 for the I-6, but you may be able to use either the SDF-96 or SDF-15 on the V-8.

SDF-96, 3.75" diameter and 4.25" long
SDF-15, 3.75" diameter and 5.25" long

I run the SDF-96 on my toyota in place of the much smaller SDF-57 and the SDF-15 on my Audi in place of the SDF-34. All of these have 8 psid, by-pass valve opening settings ....

SDF44 I don't think you have a ton of options with the 20x1.5mm threads - nothing with the 3.75" OD is longer than the 3.25" long SDF44.

SDF42 (same as my cars!) you can go with:
SDF96=4.375"
SDF15=5.375"
SDF26=7.125"

47HO, For the Cherokee, you could install a filter relocation kit and use different threads at the filter end. That would also allow you to mount the filter in a change-friendly position. Permacool sells a good selection of filter adapter parts.

After mid-'92 Jeep I6's started using 3/4x16 threads like your 4.7. It's possible the later I6 filter mount would exchange with your own. Haven't tried it.

For grins you might try test fitting one of your 4.7 filters on the Cherokee next change. 3/4x16 and 20x1.5 are very close for the engagement depth (1/4"?). If anything it'll be slightly tight.

Nice WJ, btw!

Thanks to you all! I'm amazed at the quick responses. Can't get that ANYWHERE else.

So the external dimensions are bigger. So what?

How much more filter media are you getting with the different filters?

How does that compare to the competition?

I can't speak for ALL the filters in the world, but the larger filters do have more media. For example an SD-15, does have almost 2x and the SDF-26 does have more the 2X the media. I don't think this is a competition thing - I haven't seen anyone cheese the system too bad with hollow cans and tiny media.

This IS a different argument than the length of media put in SAME size can by various manufacturers

I was wondering what filter is longer version of the SDF-64? Where are you finding this cross reference for the Amsoil filters?

JAKEGMCHD,

The SDF30 is the filter that is longer than the SDF64. It's 3/4" longer. All other measurements and specifications are the same. The reference I have is the Amsoil Cross Reference and Application Guide. The SDF64 is what's called for for my 5.3L GM engines. I will be using the SDF30 my next oil change. Hope this helps.

SDF64 is 2" OD 4.125" height
SDF32 is 3" OD 3.500" height
SDF30 is 3" OD 4.875" height

all have .8125"X16 threads

So it will fit if you have clearance.

Wasn't there also some concern that some manufacturers were using the same length media cartridge in both their shorter & longer cans? I thought that was brought up somewhere? I don't think I've heard of any larger diameter filters using smaller diameter media though, so I think you stand a better chance of gaining media by going larger rather than longer. I know this is the case with the ACDelco PF13 vs the PF53.

Dakota 2002 4.7 uses the SDF 42 oil filter. Is there a longer/deeper version of the same filter I could use. I would assume the larger filtration area would be of some benefit, maybe very minor, but some.

Looking for details regarding differences in length and OD and filtration capacity.

red2rebel,

Since yours is the identical replacement filter as my Jeep, check out the above posts on the large replacement filter dimensions. For example, SDF15 is just over 5¼" in length.

Which to use (SDF-96 or SDF-15) as "larger" filter on my Dakota 4.7? Can I get better than a "may be able to"... Are the threads the same? Is there enough room, or not?

Without crawling under my truck, can someone give me the dimensions (OD and length) of SDF-42?

Are there better filtration capabilities between the three?

From my understanding, specs are the same among the three except the length. On my 4.7 in Jeep GC, I'm using the SDF15 with no clearance problems. To be sure, you will have to make a measurement for the clearance on your engine.

Let me ask you guys something.......I have been wondering this for sometime now....I have a 99' Dodge 3500 with a cummins, 176,500 miles and have been using LF3894(stratopore) filter. I have been tossing up the idea about switching to the SDF80. Is it a better filter? Is it worth the price difference? I am currently running 10,000 mile drain intervals(Amsoil HDD15-40, oil analysis states oil still good at 10,000) with a filter change every 5000 miles. Will switching to the SDF80 allow me to go to a 10,000 mile filter change thus making up the higher cost of the SDF80 over the LF3894? With many, many ISB 6BT5.9 cummins in these dodges going a million+ miles with no by-pass filtration is it really necessary? I aplogize for the long post...just alot of questions been stored in my head for along time. Thanks for your thoughts.

I believe you could go 10K with that filter, however I would take it to, say, 7.5K the first time and tear into it to see if it's "clogeratin'" (I just made that up) - just open the filter and see how nasty it looks.

To be honest I'm a bit torn on this one myself. I can with confidence say using my FL-1A ($2.77) for 5K (mid life) works just fine - because I like to remove the old filter and add some fresh oil (to the new filter) and crankcase and go the next 5K. Amsoil SDF-15 at $8.00 for the full 10K works too...but since I have a dual mount...that's about a $5 difference (filters only) factor in NEW oil added when changing filters - it becomes a $ wash....but the peace of mind is priceless when new filters and some fresh oil goes in.
