Long filter on a low clearance car.

Today I changer my 2002 Camaro's oil and got rid of the small filter and put on a Napa Gold 1522 long filter. Has anyone heard if the longer filter causes any problems with ground clearance on this car? I don't want to hit something and damage the filter or worse the car! It really only hangs down maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch below what the shorter filter did. Thanks!

I also use the Wix 51522 on my SS and I've never had a problem and the thousands on LS1 forums use the longer filter also. So far I've never heard of someone knocking their extended filter off yet. I have also smacked a groundhog dead on at 120 mph +

and the way it hit I suspect it hit very close to where the filter is mounted.

I wouldn't worry about it, I always ran the longer filters on my 98 Formula (either the UPF58 or the M1-206) and my car was lowered with Eibach springs too, yet I never saw any evidence that the filter was hit by debris. Unless you go offroading with it, don't worry!

A long time ago, I read where someone attached a piece of wood to the "correct" filter during an oil change. At some mileage later, the wood piece was gone. I don't remember how long it lasted and the guy was positive that it couldn't have just fallen off.

IMHO, the risk, albeit small, is not worth the reward. Nothing but the stock sized filter goes on my (wife's) Formula.

How much extra life do you really think you are getting out of your engine with the larger filter?

Honestly, it's hard to put an exact number on it, but the one inch longer oil filter probably extends the life of the LS1 by maybe 10%. This is a total estimate, but even if it's only a 2% difference, the longer filters don't cost any more $$$ so why not?

One of the big reasons I started using the longer filters in the first place was because when I would go into Kmart stores in the US looking for M1-107 filters (the stock size) nobody had them, but they had tons of the M1-206.

Good question Labman, I'd like to know as well!

In the year I have owned the car it has 10,300 miles on it and the skid plate right infront of the oil filter does not have a scratch on it! I have also hit a few dips and pot holes hard and have not hit the plate so I think the filter will be ok. Time will tell!

Patman, we are so far of on this, I'm going to dismiss this as a difference of opinion.

As far the "why not", by putting the filter lower than the oil pan, you are increasing your chance of damaging the filter. I do admit that the chance is still very small, but to me it's not worth it.

I was running a longer PF 52 in place of the PF 47 on my old Grand
AM. In this case, it was horizontal and sort of stuck up closer to the
radiator or something. I thought that was a no brainer, no clearance
problem, same price, same construction, and more filter area. Down
side, Nil. Upside, not sure, but how can more filter area hurt?

Note, is there any hard evidence that Wix and M-1 are better than
AC? The well regarded Purolator and Hastings have less filter area
than AC.

Labman, I like the PF52. I don't think there is anything better for the money. And I don't think there is any better than UPF52, period. And it's only $6. Can't beat it with a stick.
