When installing a new flywheel, is it recommended to use a product such as Loctite to secure the flywheel bolts? What is a safe amount of curing time?

+1.

I could conjure up an oddball poorly designed joint where tension wasn't adequate to hold things together until the locker cured but that's unusual.

Assuming you're using Loctite 242 (blue) 24 hours is the cure time. If you need it to cure faster use primer 7471, it expensive though, about $40 a can. If you use primer you have about 3 minutes once you apply the Loctite to put the bolt in and torque it.

All that being said and as others have mentioned, don't worry about the cure time, the bolts stretch when you torque them and it is the tension created by the stretch that keeps everything in place. Loctite here is just insurance.

I have Loctite 242, but I wont have 24 hours to wait between installing the flywheel and driving. And the last thing I want is to open it back up because of a loose flywheel. So should I just avoid the Loctite in this case?

Use the Loctite and don't worry about cure time, as soon as you finish the job the car is ready to go.

the bolt is not going to magically loosen because the loctite isn't fully cured.

Really? Well, thank goodness you know a little something about magic. Because I was slightly concerned about that whole aspect. That and the vibration. Because vibration has been known to loosen bolts too, right?

Honestly, thanks for the info.

Yes, 1 hour and you can resume driving. If you are really anal wait 24 hours. I use loctite on everything that is considered a critical fastener.

I had a flexplate break after replacing the rear main seal. A friend reused the same bolts and didn't use loctite. on 2nd attempt, he used new flexplate bolts with locktite to avoid redoing the job. it was a PITA job.
