Need to do a transmission fluid change for my sister's 2004 neon. Being on a budget I wanted to go for SuperTech, but wasn't sure of quality and was probably going to go for Valvoline until I found this. SuperTech ATF+4 it is.

All ATF+4 are formulated the exact same. Chrysler didn't leave room for anything. I believe they all use the identical additive package from Lubrizol and are all group3 base stock.
 
I have noticed Mobil 1 produces two different ATF+4 fluids. Anyone know why? Mobil ATF +4 states it is a semi synthetic fluid. The Mobil Super ATF+4 is referenced to a synthetic blend. Then Valvoline states it is a full synthetic. Others like ST say it is a high quality fluid.
With the standards supposedly so tight. Does anybody know why one product is semi synthetic and the other full synthetic?

Its not as tight as everyone wants to believe.
They are multiple base stock oils that can be blended with the required additive package to meet the ATF+4 requirement.
Not all are group-III, and not all need to be 100%.
 
UnDummy - I value your input and you have encouraged me to experiment with ATF+4 - Currently running partial fills in G35 J matic, 98 accord and 00 Mazda MPV and all seem to shift very well, positive but not harsh. Also using it in PSF for all cars except accord.

Curious as to where you came to the conclusion that ATF+4 does not have to be GRP III? I know Mobil of Canada says something about partial syn on their ATF+4 but is that a function of GRP III not an official "synthetic" other than USA??

I will say that I did a freezer test of Mobil 1 ATF (2008 vintage), Maxlife (thicker formulation) and Supertech ATF+4 and all were about the same after a day at 0F. I believe Supertech is all grp III as the equivalent "MAG 1" ATF+4 produced by WPP says full synthetic.

Pennzoil is a GroupII+/III blend.
Mobil also claims it to be a synth-blend.

So, its doesn't have to be 100% group-III.

Anyone can submit their base oils for testing against the requirement. If it passes, its good enough for a license. If it doesn't, you can either try again or copy another known formula.

I give the Mopar boys credit for distinguishing 'quality' within the 'groups' of base oil realms. There are good base oils and bad base oils within each fancy Group #.

I'm still waiting for ATF+5. Whether its MPG/thin based, or using newer additive technology, I do believe that its time to improve on ATF+4.
 
AFAIK, there are only 2 or 3 certified base oils, and 1 certified additive pack (Lubrizol). They're all at least Group III, however, and Mopar says they work equivalently in the tests.
