What is the consensus? I have a friend who swears this works but who better to ask then the ultimate oil forum? Can this system replace the tried and true method of changing oil?

Drain plug has worked just fine for the past 100 years. Why complicate things ?

Any such tool is for those applications where the drain plug cannot be easily reached; like in a boat.

Those suction tools help if you're unable to get under a vehicle.
While they won't get "100%" of a sump's oil out, it'll get pretty close.
In many cases (my guess) you'll be better off doing changes on a schedule with the help of a suction tool than possibly employing an erratic patchwork of maintenance.

Emptying a transmission's pan before removing it is a great bonus.
Alas, there are fewer and fewer transmissions with removable pans so your suction tool might not see that service.
Also, there are fewer and fewer transmissions with dipsticks. In those cases you need a pressure bottle to fill the transmission from below. I do not know the name of the fitting in the pan through which the fluid is filled. Kira

I had a liquivac and the pump failed. I got one with a green plastic container from tractor supply and it has been great for years.

I have one and it is great for many things such as brake work, sucking fluid out of areas that would otherwise not be easy such as brake reservoirs. It won't work on any of my vehicles or motorcycle for a complete oil change. Thought it would work well on motorcycle and only gets about half of it out. My cars are getting older and some it will get less than a quart doing it this way. It all depends if your vehicle was designed to be changed this way. BMW's can get as much as drain plug removal. My old civic would not get a drop out suck a small amount up the tube then just air.

Using the vacuum pump I made from a $20 12 volt compressor, and a canning jar and some odds and ends, I succesfully sucked a quart out of my Nissan the other day.

The concept is great.

I agree the concept is great. With my cars, it is alot of work to setup the race ramps and getting the jack under the car. If it can get rid of 95% of the oil, I would say this is much better and safer option than getting underneath a car.
