I'm thinking of buying a 2004 LS V8. It has ~95k miles. I've read various Lincoln forums and see some upset owners, but that happens with any make/model.

I don't mind regular maintenance costs, but cannot afford to have a car in the shop every month.

Any of you have good experiences with the LS?

I would not buy an LS nor recommend them to anyone I know.

Not from owning one, but from working where I work, simple repairs are very expensive.

When they run they are great cars, fun to drive, handle great. But when they break, o man do they break.

Well, I did work on them at the dealership for a few years.

I regarded them as the "Merkur" replacement. Euro design, and expensive to fix. Not a fun vehicle to work on.

It will break. When it does break, parts, and often labor, will kill your wallet. With 95K miles I don't think it is a headache you want to mess with.

To put it blunty I have had techs come in and on one car alone request front and rear uprights (knuckles,) complete cooling system housings and hoses, all 4 window regulators, 8 spark plugs, 8 coils, cam covers and coil covers and think nothing unusual about it.

The front uprights have the lower ball joins integral to them. We have seen them go bad and ruin the lower control arms they sit on.
The rear uprights have an updated hub bearing that require new uprights as well as bearings and toe links.
Window regulators will drop windows at random.
The cooling system is plastic and when one component goes bad, replace them all.
The cam covers leak oil on to the coils and ruin the coils and plugs. The coil covers leak water from rain onto the coils.
Brake rotors are generally good for one set of pads and have to be tossed as they go below minimum spec.

Techs love them though, they make lots of hours on them.

O and they are the only Ford models in the US besides the Thunderbird that shares the chassis that has the battery in the trunk that I know of. It uses a Group 66 battery that is only used on those models and maybe the Jag chassis they are based on.

Don't let me scare you, just make sure that you have a friend that works in a Ford parts dept and another friend that is a tech who will work for beer.

I too had considered the Lincoln LS for the past several years but could not find one with really low mileage until last year.

A neighbor of mine owns two of them (V8 Sports) because his wife wanted her own, they liked them that much. They reported to me no problems one is a 2001 with around 100k and his wifes is an 04 with around 80K. He had the COPS (coil over plug) replaced on both at around 80K just as a maintenance item as they are known to go out also did the VCG (valve cover gaskets) and the plugs all at the same time. Never heard of any problems with them in the rain, nor read anything on the forums about that.

I also checked with two other co-workers who own them and they report only routine maintenance other than the COPS replaced once at around 120K , an engine sensor, and a fuel pump, water pump, and then normal oil changes and tires, brakes, and such.

It seems many owners have two of these cars so they must be fairly likeable or friendly.

Last year I found a 2000 LS v8 sport one owner with under 30K in super condition and it came with a 9,000 mile warranty. Had it all checked out first anyway and so far its been great, took it on a 6,000 mile summer trip used no oil, no problems, no rattles or squeaks either. Car ran thru the twisties great, better than most cars and we were able to make great time and came away with a combined mpg of 26.2.. now my LS has 37K on it and I have had several offers for it for more than I paid for it. But will probably keep it for at least a few years.

We like it because it has a great ride with superb handling, good power and in a compact package.
You can get parts at a good price at Rock Auto and other on-line auto parts, cheaper than the Lincoln dealer.

If you are worried about maintenance try to find a low mileage LS that has been well cared for.

A forum is a good place to check out but generally people only post when they have a problem so the problems tend to get over-amplified, as not that many post just to say their car is running good.

Absolutely correct, for every owner complaining there are THOUSANDS of contented ones who say nothing.

But the cars do really have a history of service issues. If you've got a good one consider yourself blessed.

Always liked the styling.

I had a friend with one-- V6 5spd manual. It was a wonderful car to drive. the 5spd felt like an accord with fit and finish, the RWD was terrific, and the handling was superb.

The dash layout and comfort factor was great--- better layout than a volvo, but perhaps a step behind volvo in the seats (nothing I've sat it could touch the good ole s60).

He had repeated COP failures, 1-2 window failures and shattered a rim in a large pothole. Each repair was costly.

some folks review it for awkward shifting under power with the auto trans.

I would feel ok with the car if I had the money to put in to the suspension work, BEFORE things failed. BMWs eat ball joints and tie rods too.

Their expensive to maintain, and have transmission problems. Most of the people I knew/know who had or have one had transmissions go around 80k.

The transmission is a closed system as well from my understanding is it not? Barring that they are slick looking cars.

Do you notice any difference with the V6 model in terms of problems? I was thinking a 5spd manual one would make a good family car with a bit of fun mixed in.

I had a black 04 V8 LS for more than two years.

It was a very nice car to drive and be in.

However,

I had issues with the coil packs. Got a few replaced. Then another one went. Then part of the coolant housing broke for no reason that I know of and the car overheated. So, that was a $1400 repair job.

Then another coil pack went. It just got to the point where it got really old having to get the thing fixed every 4-6 months.

The thing was running fine when I traded it in. But I knew if I kept it, in 3-4 months it would be in the shop getting fixed!

No, the transmissions are not a closed system.

They are Ford's 5r55 transmissions. The 03+ LS's have 5r55s transmissions. Same transmissions that 05+ Mustangs use.

There where some soleniod issues with early production, but that was all weeded out.

My trans was strong and in very good condition when I traded it in. . .

Oh thanks for the correction

All the owners of the LS that I know had the All the COPS replaced (and the plugs, valve covers) at the same time, then your good to go- no time in wasting replacing one at a time. They reported the cost of all this with DIY labor of around $400

I Also asked the owners(of six local cars) about time spent upon repairs and none reported anything remotely excessive, mostly normal maintenance.

I also checked (before I purchased one)with a couple of indepenant auto repair shops that I know and they reported that yes when the LS gets around 100k to 120k its common for them to need service, ie. COPS, plugs and cooling system they said were most common.

BUT the LS in there experience was not nearly as bad as several more expensive European brands that were far worse in needing repairs and more costly.

In general I do not buy used vehicles with over 50K on them and have had excellent results. IF you like the car but worried about maintenance you should look into getting an extended warranty or buy a low mileage certifed used LS with a warranty.

I finally got a chance to stop in and talk to my mechanic today. I like using his shop and trust his judgement. I want to make sure he will work on anything that I buy.

The good news is he does work on them. The bad news is that he said "they're mean to work on and expensive to maintain." He recommended I stay away, so I am taking his advice.

Thank you for all of your thoughts and helpful words.

Threads like this make me sad. IMVHO the LS is the best looking Lincoln of all time. I'd love to DD one of these but not if even half of what I hear is true. Maybe one day I'll find a roller and give it the LS/Tremec treatment? Oh well, one more for the bucket list.

I coworker had the v8 and sold it to another coworker who still uses it as a DD. The only complaint I've heard is the highway MPG at +70 is very low.

I test drove an 05 V-8 a few years back and the LM sales rep said the harsh ride and bang shifting were "normal". The car shook at 90 mph, and blew some oil getting there, and seemed to suck fuel like crazy. This was a clean used with about 40k miles, certified.

Just my limited experience.
