How does this work on a severe wear and tear item?

I assume it does not mean once I buy 1 set, I can come back every few years for free replacements..

AutoZone's warranty on their high-end brake pads did in fact mean that for a while. I used it once to get a set of worn pads replaced under warranty on my old Buick LeSabre. Two years/60k miles and the pads were shot. It was a great deal for cars or people who wore through pads quickly.

AutoZone still does. I just took a set of worn pads there and got a new set. Their higher initial price makes it worth it if you are going to keep the car for a while.

It's just part of their pricing and procurement. They probably have actuaries calculating how many people will return a worn pad, how many owners will sell before they're worn, etc. It's only good for the original owner, and they will need a receipt. Also - I think it's only generally one replacement and not replacing one after the other. They also won't have to pay for the labor, which is a pretty big cost if you don't do it yourself.

My local AAP has handed me brand new Gold disc pads before. I assume they still do that if you just bring them in evenly worn and such...

My moms brake pads have a lifetime warranty at AutoZone. I've taken them back for new ones like 5 times.

what is the procedure? you put the car on the block, take the pads off, then walk to shop, get the new one, walk back and put them on?

Depends on where you buy them from. Someone mentioned AAP. Their procedure is to either replace or refund the purchase price. I suppose it's possible to place them on blocks. However, I've heard of some warranty replacements where the replacement is made available immediately for a deposit, and the deposit is refunded when the original parts are returned. There may also be limits. AAP says that replacement parts only carry a 90 day warranty. That kind of keeps them from becoming perpetual parts.

Probably, but I would normally put the worn car parts in my bicycle bag and ride by bike to the auto parts store.

I believe Autozone is the only retailer that still offers free lifetime pad replacement regardless of cause, including wear. Does anyone lifetime warranty rotors??

Last time I used AZ pads on my kid's beater, I purchased new pads, installed them, then returned the old ones for a refund. No receipts needed (but always helpful)IF it is entered in their computer system correctly.

If you have a second vehicle, you could plan the work to use it to return the old pads with no money exchanged.

IF the OP is talking about lifetime warrantees offered by places like MIDAS, I imagine they put low quality products on that wear out fast. You get free pads, but pay exhorbitant charges for labor (just like their muffler scam).
