This comes up alot these days.. especially with dodge/chrysler as all of there 8 speed transmissions are marketed as "fill for life". There is a pretty good video on this subject that is very detailed (a little long) it also talks about fluids, and includes a chart showing all the specs side by side.

If this video is your source of information I can see where some of the misinformation in this thread and other threads comes from.

Fluid "Specifications" from a transmission manufacturer contain not only the fluid's oil properties the fluid must meet, but also the tests the fluid must pass in order to be acceptable to attach a license number to its label.

Fluid "Oil Properties" are NOT the manufacturer's transmission fluid specifications but list the basic properties of the fluid.

Fluid "Oil Properties" SDS's, and VOA's do not tell you if the fluid's Dynamic friction coefficients [shown by Mu(v) graphs] are proper, nor does it tell you the fluids chemical composition.

I do agree there is no such thing as a Fill-for-Life ATF. We are progressing toward that goal but chemistry-wise, we are not there yet.

Agreed but I think it would be nearly impossible for an average joe to get his hands on the complete specifications. I imagine the majority of companies would keep their exact formula a closely guarded secret

True but what would the average Joe do with the information contained in the Manf. specifications?

A formulator or a blender can obtain those specifications, usually for a small fee. Occasionally, those specifications are embedded in an SAE paper as well.

Every blender wants to keep his income stream flowing so no blender will publish his formulation or suppliers of chemical components.

Makes sense
