Life at Twitter pre Musk? Could this be accurate?

That he can spout off on Ukraine's borders, Tiawan's sovereigty and other things that most people might consider in their heads but not say out loud points to his being on the spectrum and more damaging, his being surrounded by people who don't tell him to shut the F up.
Why would you have a problem with an individual expressing his/her opinion? Is it because you don’t agree with it?

That the very first thing all tyrannical governments did, silence the opposing voices.

It's called bad management. Me thinks Elon's lunch numbers are whack, unless they had lunch at Morton's everyday.
Silicon Valley is legendary for its perks, but much of that is long gone. Cupertino's Apple was the worst (best?). But many of those workers suffered because they thought the gravy train would never end. And mfg left Cupertino a long time ago.

I can tell you, with all the salaries, perks, etc, there are many slackers. It makes me sick. While many companies did the best they could to weather the pandemic and had employees work from home, those days are over. Entitled brat employees are now expecting that. Problem is, worker demand outstrips supply; workers are getting away with murder.

In my experience, departments have 1 star to every 5 (or 10) slackers, or something like that. The good news is, if you are willing to put out the 110%, are a good fit and are in a good company, you just might end up rich beyond your expectations.

I love it here. And I salute Elon for telling Twitter employees to come to work or resign. Full disclosure, I think the Twitter acquisition was stupid, but everythiong Elon touches seems to turn to gold, so what do I know?

Pareto distribution is a cold, hard, fact of human productivity.

If the employees are expected to live at work, these "perks" make life a little more bearable.

Biscuit,

I had to google "Pareto distribution". Never heard of it.
The Pareto distribution, named after the Italian civil engineer, economist, and sociologist Vilfredo Pareto[1] (Italian: [paˈreːto] US: /pəˈreɪtoʊ/ pə-RAY-toh),[2] is a power-law probability distribution that is used in description of social, quality control, scientific, geophysical, actuarial, and many other types of observable phenomena; the principle originally applied to describing the distribution of wealth in a society, fitting the trend that a large portion of wealth is held by a small fraction of the population.[3][4] The Pareto principle or "80-20 rule" stating that 80% of outcomes are due to 20% of causes was named in honour of Pareto, but the concepts are distinct, and only Pareto distributions with shape value (α) of log45 ≈ 1.16 precisely reflect it. Empirical observation has shown that this 80-20 distribution fits a wide range of cases, including natural phenomena[5] and human activities.[6][7] (from Wiki- see link below).

I have respect for Elon, but he's really testing my patience of late. That he overpaid 34 Billion for Twitter is confirmed, and he's about to destroy the thing to loose his total investment?

That he can spout off on Ukraine's borders, Tiawan's sovereigty and other things that most people might consider in their heads but not say out loud points to his being on the spectrum and more damaging, his being surrounded by people who don't tell him to shut the F up.

That SV is a different world is okay, if it gives the brightest lights something to aspire to because we need that group to ASPIRE.

Who are you, or anyone else to have issues over his speech? You are free to espouse your commentary on this forum much in the same way Musk can. Why are you advocating for his speech to be shut down? That is exactly what you are saying, by proxy of the people surrounding him. Like him or not he is a grown man who I would venture is far more successful in life than you. Just sayin...

Between my LE and your Mil service, we live it daily. It's applicable and relative. It is also rather readily observed in your and my fields more than some others. This of often couched by second and third-line supervisors by stating "Not everyone can be Chief; we still need Indians."

Well... we are not as free as Musk against censorship.

Twitter was obsolete upon founding in 2006 and definitely obsolete when the first iMessage was sent

Remember it was intended as an SMS service?

2G and 3g are sunsetted so the basis of the company is gone.

This is akin to making wagon wheels for sports cars.

Twitter has no purpose in existing

Back in 1998, it might have made sense.
Twitter still has lots of users and a purpose. Ridiculous mate.

Remember, he was providing free Starlink service to the Ukrainian militants. His actions do not match his rhetoric.

I am watching some midterm election shenanigans on Twitter. I did the same in 2020. I like seeing the opinion of people in office and what they are working on.

I think Elon said the budget at twitter for food service in S.F. was 13m for the year. With everybody working at home, it was going to waste.

Everywhere I've worked there were slackers, not 4 out of 5, or 9 out of 10 but at least a few. Wally on 'Dilbert' comes to mind.

It takes a long time to clean up a poor running operation, but once you do it performs very well. And the employees can and do take pride in working there.

I agree with you about the price paid for Twitter. What was he thinking? I just hope spending/losing a lot of money won't hurt Tesla.

Not sure if many of you know what WeChat is. It’s an app used in china and it basically allows to do everything in one app. Buy-sell, chat, post pictures, read news, watch videos etc. all in one.

If he can pull something like this off, whatever he paid for Twitter will look like lunch money IMO.
Excellent point. Now that you mention it, I recall hearing a little about WeChat.
Elon once said, regarding Tesla, something like, "If I only wanted to get make money, I would have started a software company."

Musk is a software guy at heart. Hook up everything and have it at your voice command in your Tesla. Then sell subscriptions to other car companies. The world just may be his oyster... OMG...

I spent my entire 28 year career working as a systems engineer in Silicon Valley.

One thing that's lost in this perk discussion is that Silicon Valley is a dog eat dog place. Budgets are a zero sum game. It's an "at will" place of employment. If you want to prosper, or even survive, you better be willing to play hardball with your career.

Scott

PS The woman in that video.....she wouldn't have lasted three months at my place of employment. She sounds like nothing more than "overhead". I can absolutely guarantee you a person like her would not be doing an all nighter to meet a deadline or find a fix for a mission critical customer.

Probably a diversity hire…
Hard to say. We had our share of college hires from prestigious universities who were underperformers. Later in my career I managed a group of senior engineers. This one guy thought his "stuff" didn't stink. His attitude slowly turned into one of defiance and insubordination. One day he walked by my office and made a snarky comment. I followed him to his office and fired him on the spot. He was gone within the hour.

In a shortage of qualified workers, the perks are part of the sell, especially to the targeted candidates.

I wouldn't say 'expected', it is more being offered the opportunity to work beyond the minimum customary for the role. Now obviously if one enters certain industries such as public auditing, high end law or banking (not your corner safe and deposit), you are agreeing to the conditions including the grueling hours, but one doesn't have to enter those fields, nor does one have to live at work in most tech situations. Either choice is fine as long as those who elect not to sacrifice do not expect the same comp and opportunities as those who do.

When folks expectations exceed their efforts, that can be a problem and those individuals can be incredibly toxic to an organization...and I made sure they chose another situation. As someone said, it is hardball...and it works.

I'm not disagreeing with you w&w. At the company I worked for, everyone got the same perks. The difference was salaries, cash bonuses, and stock options.

A lot of workers would stay a few hours into the evening just to get free supper. Even more so if they are living alone.

Except most were working from home from what it sounds like.

If they were working from home then they weren’t enjoying the perks. Those days are over now.
