License plate covers

I'm looking for a clear license plate cover to first protect them from delaminating in the sunlight (which is an issue on more than one of my cars), and I'd like to put a thin frame around it too for looks. Protection from cameras is a secondary benefit. Don't want any sprays or things that look like a big bubble.

Weather Tech makes a great product. it's a frame and lens integrated into one piece. Even has a nice gasket to seal it. Not cheap, but VERY worth it.

NJ plates suck.
All of my plates are delaminated.
New plates i picked up 2 weeks ago were
stuck together and upon seperating them
i peeled some of the black off the letters.

From what I remember, Mythbusters did a segment on the camera issue and found nothing works to hide the numbers from photography.

I'm curious what the legalities are of repainting your plates. The numbers on the plate of oilbabe's car are almost completely faded. I can repaint the numbers with the original color. But what if someone had to go further and redo the background?

I see few plate cover, after a while it getting so brown ( mabe damage from the sun ) you barely can read the tag number, and cop pull you over that way.

if any one know one that stay clear for life and UV protection, let me know.

My brother has the same problem, he has a state centennial plate-and the numbers(red) are so faded he got pulled over once. He tried a magic marker to color in the numbers but that didn't last long. Finally got some cheap hobby paint and painted the numbers again. He should get new plates soon I would think; the state changed the number/letter sequence and the vast majority of plates are now the new style.
the background doesn't need touching up. As long as the numbers are readable, you're good to go.

How long has he had those plates? I know here in Washington after 7 years you have to buy a new plate when it comes time to reregister.

Each state is different. Wisconsin plates don't cost more that the regular re-newal fee.

States are stretching the time between new plates. The new ones are a different design each time. By different I mean change the numbering system, color, etc.. so they are easily recognized as the new/old plate. Not sure what wisconsin's is.

Why protect the states plate? Let it rot away its their problem if they sell [censored] plates. Makes it harder for the cops to read.

IIRC, the place the makes the plates, or the coating, for washington warranties them for 5 years. Somewhere they determined 7 years is good so you are right, they seem to be stretching the time.
Yeah, you do get a new number, by default. Which irks me because the new numbering system sets off my OCD big time. The old system is 3 numbers then 3 letters separated by a dash. The new plates are 3 letters then 4 numbers with no separation. Its so uneven and *****.
Actually, now that I think about it, I think new plates are the same as regular renewal too. But there is an option to have your old number reprinted on the new plate for a fee. I think that is what Im thinking of. I think if I get to 7 years Ill definitely have my number reprinted. I like it. Its cool because it has an 'X' in it. I dont know what I do when I get a new car and have to get one of the retarded looking plates.

Wow, glad our Florida tags do not have this problem......but we are given new tags every 7-10 years, "depending on condition"......10 years is the max - they automatically give you a new tag after 10 years.

License plate covers are illegal in IL, although I have seen people using them.

I am always amazed by the differences between/among? the various states when it comes to "enforcement" of the various and sundry laws, rules/regulations & procedures as they apply to motor vehicles...

It is so anal-retentive in $ome juri$diction$ one could easily be led to believe it is looked upon solely as a revenue generating device vs. something that was in any way either practical or safety-related!

Often times just a(nother?) excuse to $top you.

Motorcycles seem to be particularly vulnerable in some places.

Of course, it used to be that if the 1st cop couldn't catch you...

Now the convicted rapists get out in a couple years and the serial smash & grab guys are out of custody before the paperwork is completed!

indeed they are. But our state will give you FREE replacements on rotted plates.

There are a couple of sites that make replica plates, I was interested in looking at. Mainly because they are plastic and not raised lettering. Thus making it less reflective at night in photos, it might not work but its plastic so it wont rott.
