LG refrigerator not cooling- motor is very hot to the touch

Just replace the refrigerator, those LG linear compressors are nothing but a headache. Recommend Whirlpool, GE or Frigidaire.

My brother bothered with getting it repaired, it was a headache and then just broke again 3 years later. My dad was smart and just replaced his when it broke.
Yeah tell me about it. I got a Samsung made in 2019, was a floor demo model never switched on cooling till I bought it in 2022 and now it's dead. Replaced it with a 2014 Kenmore from my dead in-laws house. Works great. But it seems like stuff inside of that refrigerator moves around by it's self. Oh well.

I had the same thing happen under warranty, the compressor was bad. known issie on these.

10000% disagree. Frigidaire electrolux customer service sucks.

Whirlpool kitchenaid are more reliable
I’ll never own another Whirlpool refrigerator. The things leak water inside because the drain freezes up. I have one now that I need to remove everything from it and de-ice the drain line. I’m tempted to go get a new Frigidaire.

You can install this heat probe kit to keep the drain hole from icing up. Or just fabricate a facsimile probe from a piece of aluminum flashing. It clamps around the defroster heating element like a heat sink and extends into the drain opening to melt the ice in the drain line. The newer Whirlpool refrigerators come from the factory with this feature.

LG compressors are really not that good currently. I see alot of LG compressor failures on 1.5 thru 5 ton residenitial HVAC equipment, and their linear compressor in refrigerators are part of a class action lawsuit, and from what I read back when I was considering a new refrigerator is to avoid them.

I would get it fixed under warranty, and if in good shape sell it on FB or CL, and get a different brand.

My plan is to fashion a heat probe out of a piece of 12ga. Copper wire.

Just pour some hot water down the drain from time to time?

I have a Kenmore which is a rebadged Whirlpool, it is 15 years old now and I had this drain problem once maybe two years ago? So now I do the hot water thing.

We have a Frigidaire freezer and a refrigerator and two dishwashers. Bought extended warranty on the fridge but haven't had problems with any of them.

The copper wire will eliminate the manual defrosting. Besides, a frost free refrigerator should be just that.

We actually keep a second fridge unplugged that we bought from a nearby estate sale for $25.

Once a month we plug it in for a few hours. We figure that when ours goes we can use that one as a temporary fix.

Meanwhile everything except our last dishwasher has lasted for about 20 years. That one apparently had a second filter that we didn't know about and that was all she wrote.

For me:
GE for range, microwave, and dishwasher
Frigidaire for refrigerator
LG for front loading washer
And Whirlpool for the no frills dryer.

Not a bad list, but I can't bring myself to buy anything LG. Bought a cheap GE top load washer 2 years ago, it has an agitator, fills with as much water as you want.

I’m
LG used to be "Lucky Goldstar". If it doesn't break, consider yourself lucky. If it does break and you can get them to repair it for free, you get a Goldstar.

Only Whirlpool and Bosch major appliances for me.
My previous GE made by Lucky Goldstar in Korea lasted 17 years.

It goes deeper than the compressor being a pile.
Do yourself a favor GON and scrap it and buy a new one. Ultimately it wont be worth the trouble to attempt a repair on this giant piece of dung. I went through this with LG last year, they know they have a major issue and are doing damage control at this point. The qualification for the class action suits is narrow.
Another LG item will never enter this house.
Their Presidential team is a joke.

Well, I am sure it can go deeper. I think they replaced a few other little parts in replacing the compressor. It still works fine, 3 years or so now.

My current list
GE Top Load Washer 20+ years old
Hotpoint Dryer 20+ years old
GE Side by Side refrigerator inside main home 5 years old
Frigidaire Range 6 years old (replaced a Whirlpool that was 5 years old and came with the house)
Whirlpool Dishwasher 11 years old (came with the house) Also, the only decent Whirlpool Appliance in the house.
GE upright freezer 2 years old
Frigidaire garage refrigerator 30 years old
Whirlpool apartment refrigerator 19 years old and has the dreaded freezer drain water inside problem.
GE stacked washer/dryer apartment 11 years old.

I am glad it worked out for you. Its also a common failure to have the tubing corrode in the system and have that wipe out the compressor. The repair guy convinced me the first time out that it was worth the $900 to replace the "warrantied" compressor. After 2 compressors and a total of 5 service calls he finally called it D.O.S. The LG customer service people were a joke, their final resolution was a 10% discount on a new one. I told them anything short of a direct replacement wouldnt fly. Obviously I no longer have an LG
