I think the way they market their vehicles tends to target people who aren't very interested in cars other than as a point A to point B conveyance. They want something that is reliable and that they won't have to give a 2nd thought about. That type of person is the most likely type of person to get into real trouble if the unexpected happens.
On the other hand, I do think the gearshift configuration in some of their vehicles is needlessly confusing, and I've covered that issue in other posts. As well, the gas pedal in those Toyota/Lexus vehicles I've looked at has no pivot where the pedal attaches to the arm and the bottom edge of it touches the floor when pushed all the way down, so that makes it more likely to get trapped by a floor mat.
