My dad bought an 02 lexus es 300 in the middle of 01. It was basically a weekend car and he put about 500 miles on it by 04. He let me drive it over the summer and i got it up to 3000 miles and i suggested an oil change. He called the dealer and they told him the first checkup is at 5000 miles. So then he started driving it as his daily driver and got it to 5000 so i took it in for oil change and all. I guess now hes at 8000 and the next service interval is 10,000 miles. He tortures the car (Lots of flooring, lots of cold starts and rapid take offs, etc). I am suggesting another oil change but the dealer says at 10,000. I know you are usually supposed to change every 3k miles or less.

I offered to change it for him but he says he wants to keep his warranty and will take it to the dealer at 10,000 to get the service. I talked to someone at the dealership and he said that the 5k service interval is correct. Am i right or wrong that he should have it changed? ITs at 8000 miles now and 3.5 years old with one change. Do they use synthetics at the dealer or are their engines non wearing, or does it need a change?

Sorry bout the long post, wanted to give as much info as possible, thanks a ton.

3000 mile intervals arent necssary as a rule. Sometimes it is, but its very engine dependent.

Given the profile, M1 10w-30 or 0w-40 euro formula would be great, IMO. M1 is real stable, and does good in toyota engines. The 0w-40 will flow a bit better at startup, after sitting for a long time, may be more stable over long times between drains, and will be more resistant to hard driving conditions.

My dad is the same way ,after 5 or 10 years he buys a new car. Can't worry about dads car. I get a kick out of people who spend a ton of money keeping their car like new then get a new one every 3 or 5 years,

Two Michigan winters on the same OCI?

Yikes....and don't tell me the miles are low...that just means condensation to me.

My $0.02, change the oil every 6 months regardless of miles. Put 0W-30 in say in early November and then 5W-40 in early May. You could probably get by with either of these year 'round.
