for the es300 size lexus, what year did it cease being a camry with leather seats and became more of a different car?

IMHO, starting with the Third Generation Mid-Year Refresh in 1999.
But technically speaking the ES300 stopped being based off the Camry with the 2013 ES, and it is now being based off of the Avalon.
I prefer the 4th generation, which is what I own now. Love it to death!

Actually I have one and it shares most mechanical parts with the Camry. Engine,trans,chassis is all the same. The main difference is in the interior, standard features,soundproofing, and entertainment.

Chassis sharing has been going on for over 40 years, maybe 50!...Moreso today! Nothing wrong with it in terms of the way car mfg's need to bring a product to the market.
Camaro/Firebird, GM Trucks, Ford T-Bird/Lincoln Mark**, Bonny/Caprice/Delta/LeSabre, Fury/Polara/NewPort.
Today or at least recently:
Camry/ES/Avalon, RX/Hilndr/Sienna/Venza
Accord Coupe/Acura CL, Civic/Integra/RS or even...Pilot/Oddssey/Ridgeline which are(IIRC) built on a lengthened/strengthened Accord Chassis...I may not quite have that correct but, you get what I'm saying?
This is nothing new and today, many small SUV's are on their companies small sedans chassis such as the Lancer/Outlander, Civic/CR-V, Corolla/Rav4
I think that these companies have done a good job bringing vehicles to the market in different guizes while sharing chassis' and saving themselves some money by not having to design and carrying so many different chassis in stock/inventory/planning etc. All while trying to meet so many different govt' new criteria/mandates for safety/emmissions etc.

I also like the way car mfg's have lessened the interior color choices, as they allow 2 or 3 interior colors that match nicely their 7 or 8 exterior colors.
Years ago, you could get something like, 10 or 11 interior color choices for the 11 or 12 or 15 exterior color choices on some vehicles.
Lessening all of these color choices was good cost cutting in the factorys, that didn't hurt quality.

The B8 Audi S4 isn't on the Jetta platform it has it's own platform that VW doesn't use as far as I know.

That's correct. There's almost no platform sharing between VW and Audi at this point.
And BTW, the old A4/S4 was based on the Passat. And it was still an extremely capable car. I'm not poo-pooing platform sharing at all.

Agreed, blindfolded you would be hard pressed to tell the difference from riding in a Camry XLE and an ES350. This is what makes the 2013 Avalon such a good deal compared to the ES350
