I am not aware that the visual color of an oil can indicate any type of "wear" on the oil....

This site has a pretty intelligent and sophisticated car crowd yet we keep seeing post after post talking about how the oil could go x amount of more miles because of the way it looks????

P.S. Happy holidays to all!!!!

Sorry for venting.....

Welcome to my world...

The reason why people are talking about color is they are NOT READING back and finding out FACTS.

Why research when you know it all?

Bill

This happens so frequently because of two primary reasons.

1) The bitog search feature is not user-friendly. If you've been here a while you catch on to the hang of it, but for newbies, fuhgedaboudit.

2) It's much easier to just ask than to dig for the answer. Especially given my number 1 reason.

Yea, it pretty much the worst search engine I've used, and its on a technical site where finding data is the most imporant attribute, unless you just come here to chat.

If my oil came out Jet Black after 5K-7K miles I would be very worried...When it comes out a dark or very dark amper I am very happy cause that is the way it is supposed to come out.

There are people right here who go 10K miles between changes and their oil is a nice dark amber...I am sure they would not be a happy camper if the oil came out jet black...Some even said so.

ONLY a Diesel should come out jet Black.

I would say color plays a role.

Bill I'm not sure how many people know or use this feature of google, however it is an outstanding search feature for forums even with a good search engine, or search criteria. The google advanced lets you search back through time, data etc on site, it is an outstanding feature !!

Even so I have searched for some things that did not show up on google advanced, nor the forum search with no luck because of my poor wording, or wording of post. I'm not a long time member, however to the above post about if yo uhave been here long enough to catch the hand of teh search engine.... I have not !!

Darker than usual oil indicates some cleaning is going on, in my experience.
It also could be indicative of excessive heat.

Color?
Just one more bullet in the chamber.
Use it for good or bad.

Over the years, I can also use smell .

Man I was just about to start a new thread about my oil color too?!?

My new ecotec 2.2 has just had it's fourth oil change and every time it's been dark as heck. In a new engine with only 7k miles how much cleaning can be going on? Is the eco a tough on oil engine?

No doubt about it, the board search function does not. It's a real piece.

But really nothing beats READING through a board before posting. I'm on a few and there is a reason why I have a low post count compared to others who have been around the same time. I try to learn and spend time browsing around.

Nope. Easy on oil.

Don't worry about oil color! PLEASE! If you are really concerned then get a used oil analysis and then lets see what REALLY is happening.

All this [censored] about oil cleaning and that is the reason why the oil is black is another spew.

Take care, Bill

Your response is exactly what we are talking about here.....

Color intensity or lack of HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WEAR!!!!!

Different oils in different engines with diffrent driving styles will look different....Again it inplies nothing about engine protection...

Thanks for supporting our post with your comment....
