Along with Bill and Ray, I guess I'm the 3rd cousin in the dino lovers trio

200,000 miles out of a 4300 that I've taken care of for my pops using nothing but the cheapest dino - even the dreaded Pennzoil (cue the horror movie shreaking noises) 5w30. Still runs great, actually it runs better than it did with say, 100,000 miles I'd say (just changed out 100,000 + mile Platinum plugs). Oil pressure is maybe a hint lower than it was when new, especially after it gets heatsokaed in hot tempes - gets to about 17 or 18 psi idle now where as it used to never drop below 20 at idle. Barely consumes any oil and still gets well over 20 mpg highway. Clean as a whistle when the intake was off to replace gaskets.

I like mineral oil in my TR3 because it has never seen synthetics and leaks could be a problem. Also it is seldom used ie Sundays etc and mineral oil is suppose to cling to parts used infrequently.

I recall I once read a test of lubricants' abilities to prevent corrosion. It may have been a test for gun lubricants, IIRC. It'd be interesting to see something similar done for current engine oils. Maybe some steel flat stock with prepared surfaces placed into to some 80°C oil for a few seconds and then allowed to hang outside in a sheltered location.

Who is that likes to do home laboratory tests...JAG?

Maybe this would give some indication of whether HDEOs really provide any advantage in corrosion inhibition, and in the same light, if syns are at a disadvantage.

His fishing pole?

Is this just another thinly veiled conventional vs. synthetic oil threads or are you pulling my fishing pole?

Well...if you're not into making your own...you can buy some pre-mixed.

I'm suspicious that many of the conventional oils are sporting a small % of GRP 3, 4,or 5 to aid seal swelling or low temp flow. It may be so small a % that the marketing dept doesn't think it is worth mentioning. Havoline and GTX come to mind - great used oil analysis with clean engines. Cheers all! DV
