I love reading on this site, so much knowledge and different opinions. So here is where I am at, I bought a 98 Lincoln Mark VIII with the 4.6 DOHC 4V motor. I purchased the car in the fall, and only put 500 miles on it and parked it for the winter to keep it out of the snow and cold. Right now there is unknown oil in the crankcase and I haven't changed it since buying the car (you Don't have to tell me) so I'm trying tun this mess around before is gets worse

I'm pulling it out of the garage this weekend so I want to get off on the right foot this time.

I'm planning on changing the oil and filter with a conventional oil and a Wix filter and get it started on an ARX cleaning regiment. I plan on doing two full clean/rinse cycles. After the cleaning is done I'm not 100% positive on what oil to use... I'm debating between either Motorcraft 5w20, which I have been running in my Crown Vic with good results OR Mobile 1 in a 5w20 or 5w30 weight, either way I will be using Wix filters.

The car has 98k on it right now.

I vote for MotorCraft. Just my personal opinion. I like M1 as well but the MotorCraft is way cheap right now in the 5 quart jugs.

Hey KK,

Good to see you over here from the LVC forum, I have the same screenname there.

I agree with the others motorcraft is good oil and you'll be happy with it. Good call on the ARX, it is good stuff.

I thought that was you mang.... I'm amazed that everyone has said Motorcraft.... most of the time it seems like no one agrees on ANYTHING here... I was more skewed toward the Motorcraft anyways.....

So I was thinking of doing an analysis on the oil that is in the crankcase right now... see how nasty that [censored] really is.... I just don't know about the whole oil analysis thing.

Go ahead and run an analysis now before you get started with you ARX treatment, then after you do the second Motorcraft oil change take another one to see what it looks like. That's the second Motorcraft change after you get through with all of you ARX clean and rinse phases.

Good Advice.

So not having any prepackaged oil analysis kit right now, can I collect some oil when I do the first change this weekend and just let it sit for a while before having it analyzed, there isn't a shelf life for oil before having it analyzed is there?

The nifty oil lifeometer in the dash says I have 0% oil life left

No problem letting it sit. I have heard of oil sitting for as much as a year before being tested. Not that you should make a habit out of it though... :)

It's Mobil not Mobile. Some people get touchy over the misspelling around here...

I would also like to mention at this point that I am planning on using Oreily's brand conventional oil in 5w30 weight while I do my ARX treatment... reason being that it meets the requirement of being conventional oil and is cheap. Planning on using a Wix filter during the ARX process too. What do people have to say for/against that idea. Planning on doing two full clean/rinse cycles.

Wix filters are great, especially if you get them cheap in bulk quantity from someone like Fleet Filter. Otherwise, Motorcraft filters are better bang for the buck. The FL-820S is an outstanding filter for the money.

Do you ever hear any rattle on start-up with your 4.6's? It's a very common thing with the 4.6 if the anti drain-back valve in the filter isn't sealing well. The Motorcraft filter is one of the only filters that doesn't have that problem.

If you don't experience that on any of your vehicles using the Wix filter, keep using them.
