Les Schwab Lawsuit
It's a West Coast tire chain, was started by the old man Les Schwab, who got pisced off by service once or twice in his day and created an exceptional chain. After he died, it became just another corporation with a bunch of executive leaches. I just called for a quote on my tires installation, the set I bought elsewhere, and they quoted me $218

I use yes, Wal-Mart to install carry in tires. Have never had an issue with Wal-Mart but have had issues with Discount Tire. YMMV.

I don't think we have Les Schwab in So Cal.

I used Walmart to install carry-in tires before, I paid for lifetime rotation/balance, but when I tried it I had to wait more than 2.5-3 hours. They skipped my turn to serve the ones who was behind me for either oil change or buying new tires. After that experience I didn't go back to Walmart for any auto related service.

When I ought my pick up truck 7 years ago, there was a sales recpt in the glove box from work done by Les Schwab.

Among the other grossly over priced items on the bill was:

installation of 4 spark plugs @ $24 per plug.

This was only the labour cost, on a Toyota 22R. The job should take 10 minutes.

Overpricing and dishonesty are two different things. Charging higher prices, or "what the market can bear", and getting people to pay it, is just good business.

It's not good business to earn a reputation as a business that charges a lot more than their competition for the same work.

Reputation aside, if people keep coming back, it's good business.

My son worked at Les Schwab while in college and before joining the Army.
They are a very employee oriented company and they do expect you to work very hard (they made their reputation on running out to greet customers in the lot). They are also very expensive and warrantees are a big part of their sales pitch. My son learned that "we don't sell tires, we sell service".

I've said this a million times....

Its a tag team game with service writer and mechanics. These guys won't make a living if they just mount tires and do oil changes.

They tried ripping my son off when he was stationed in WA. They weren't very successful though, his old man taught him well. LOL

Yes. At one time when the owner was at the helm it might have been a better operation but now that it is just another company with anon executives in charge it's all about the last red cent they can wrest from your fingers.

Being a PNW native I have been around Les Schwab stores all my life. Like many business that grow rapidly there are good stores and bad stores. I've experienced both. I've known a guy who has worked for them since he was 18 and now manages a store in Idaho. He told me years ago that the Clackamas store was badly managed and to never go there.

The store near my place is very professional, has provided free tire rotations and flat repairs on tires I didn't buy from them, and I have purchased tires from them that were competitively priced to other stores in the area.

Your comfortable with your cars at Walmart but not Discount Tire?

I've bought a lot tires from Les. Good service, fair prices, and they back what they sell, in writing.
To earn my business, they even rotate the tires on my new vehicles no charge.

I been living in the PNW for 18 years and never bought tires from Les Schwab. I have bought over 10 sets of tires from America's.

Les Schwab is hit or miss - and their tires are ridculously marked up. They carry Toyo, Nitto and Ohtsu in my neck of the woods last time I checked and charged Bridgestone/Michelin prices for them.

A business that charges more CAN take better care of it's (possibly and hopefully fewer) customers. Many people are willing to pay a premium price for premium service.

Every time I go to LS for tires and/or wheels, they will only talk to me about what is in stock, even if I tell them I am willing to order the wheels/tires I want, and they only have ONE tire that fits my vehicle. And it is usually $50-70 more per tire than an equivalent tire at Discount Tire.

For their other services, they are top notch.
